Wir leben in einer Zeit grundlegenden, vielfältigen und schnellen Wandels, in dessen Verlauf sich auch die Bedeutung der Kommunikationsmedien verändert. Es ist das Anliegen des vorliegenden Bandes, einen Metaprozeß "Mediatisierung von Kommunikation" theoretisch zu entwerfen und zu begründen, mit dem dieser gesellschaftliche Wandel analysiert werden kann. Der Band beruft sich dabei auf empirischen Studien über die computervermittelte Kommunikation und über die Weiterentwicklung der ‚alten' Medien. In Bezug auf diese empirischen Grundlagen wird ein handlungstheoretisch-konstruktivistisches Konzept von ‚Mediatisierung' entwickelt, in dessen Perspektive sich Einzelbeobachtungen, Ergebnisse empirischer Arbeiten und kommunikations- und medienwissenschaftliche Theoriestücke fruchtbar zusammendenken lassen.
