Excerpt from Medical Jurisprudence Perhaps the early demand for a new American edition of Taylor's classical medical jurisprudence may in some measure be attrib ntable to the new features added at the time of the preceding Ameri can revision. The work was then brought thoroughly to date, and the law and judicial decisions both in Great Britain and the United States were introduced, together with a tabulation of cases and a reference to authorities. These changes made the work more serviceable to all classes in the two professions which it joins, increasing its hold as a favorite text-book in schools of medicine and law, rendering it even more useful to physicians in practice, and lawyers in the preparation of briefs and confirming its previous acceptance as an authority, by all English-speaking judicial tribunals. Since the issuance of the previous edition a strong impulse has been given to Forensic Medicine, by the International Congress of Medical Jurisprudence, by the Congress of Medical Jurisprudence of New York, 1895, and also by the special development of medico-legal Surgery in various societies. The present time, therefore, is most auspicious for the appearance of this new edit-ion, and it is fortunate that the demand for it comes at a time when these important advances can be represented. The increasing frequency of damage cases renders this department of medico-legal Surgery of growing importance. The eleventh American edition included the admirable work with which Dr. Thomas Stevenson had enriched the twelfth English edi tion, and was a thorough revision of all previous American and Eng lish editions. Excerpt from Medical Jurisprudence, Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Vol. 2 A medical Opinion or certificate may be required as to the danger of a given wound, and on this opinion may depend the question of bail for the prisoner. By the danger of a wound in such a case is usually meant imminent danger, as any wound may be remotely dangerous to life. Slight wounds, as already stated, may result fatally under certain conditions. Under the French practice a slight wound is one which does not incapacitate one from work for more than twenty days. Looked at in another way, slight or severe wounds may be classified according as they are completely curable, leaving no infirmity or disturbance Of function, or not completely curable. The latter are such as are necessarily fol lowed by permanent or temporary infirmity. The question as to the severity of any given wound may sometimes be left to the jury to decide from the description of the wound, or a medical opinion may be required. Although the intent of the assailant is Often of equal or greater importance than the severity or kind of wound, yet this can only occasionally be inferred from the surgical aspects of the wound.
