Excerpt from Text-Book of Medical Jurisprudence and Toxicology This Text-book has been written more particularly to meet the wants of students of Legal Medicine. The author is aware that the field has already been occupied by able and popular treatises on medical jurisprudence, well known to the professions of medicine and law; but an experience of over twenty years, as a public teacher of this branch of science, has convinced him that students in both these professions, who desire to acquire a knowledge of medical jurisprudence, are too often deterred from their purpose by being confronted by the ponderous works of recognized masters, extending to three, and even six large octavo volumes. Excerpt from Text-Book of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology At the present time the duties Of the coroner are chiefly to hold inquiry into the cause of death when there is any reason to doubt that death resulted from natural causes. When death results from natural causes, and under ordinary conditions, the medical attendant is bound, under a penalty of forty shillings, to certify as to the cause. The registrar of deaths accepts such a certificate when accompanied by oral testimony given by a person who was present at the time of death, and issues a certificate accordingly, authorising the interment of the deceased. Excerpt from A d104-Book of Legal Medicine This volume is prepared and published, primarily, as a help to medical students interested in Legal Medicine, but it is adapted as well to the needs of practitioners who wish to have the latest advances in Medical Jurisprudence at their service. The writer has ventured to cite illustrative cases for his text from the standard treatises of Forensic Medicine, and to these authors he desires to express his obligations; these he has supplemented with details from his own personal experience, which has been exceptionally full during the past twenty eight years, as a medical examiner for the city of Boston, his investigations having comprised during that period over eight thousand deaths, under a suspicion of violence. The departments of Toxicology and of the Mcdico-legal Relations of Psychiatry have been purposely omitted from the volume, inasmuch as they have acquired an importance deserving, in each instance, independent treatment by specialists. The author makes no apology for limiting himself to Massachusetts Statutes in his citations of the law, believing, as he does, that these citations represent the most progressive and most intelli. Excerpt from Medical Jurisprudence, Vol. 2: Forensic Medicine and Toxicology First, is the stain a blood stain, or does it contain blood? Second, if a blood stain, does the blood come from a bird, fish, reptile, or from a mammal? Third, if the blood is mammalian blood, did it come from any given species Of mammal? This question usually assumes the form Of whether the stain is a human blood stain or that of some animal. In some cases the data given are such that the question only arises as between human blood and that of some specified animal. It is some times alleged, for instance, that the blood is that of a chicken, fish, pig, horse, ox, or sheep, in which case the expert is only called upon to decide between a stain made by human blood and that of the animal mentioned. In other cases, however, no data are given, and the expert must state whether his examina tion has given results which show that the blood in the stain examined is, or is not, consistent with its having originated from a human being. The methods employed for the identification Of blood stains are: First, chemical; second, optical; third, microscopi cal examination for the identification of the blood corpuscles, or a combination Of all Of these methods Of investigation. But before considering these in detail it is necessary to take up some Of the physical and other properties of the blood, which may have a very important bearing in certain medico-legal cases. Excerpt from Medical Jurisprudence Perhaps the early demand for a new American edition of Taylor's classical medical jurisprudence may in some measure be attrib ntable to the new features added at the time of the preceding Ameri can revision. The work was then brought thoroughly to date, and the law and judicial decisions both in Great Britain and the United States were introduced, together with a tabulation of cases and a reference to authorities. These changes made the work more serviceable to all classes in the two professions which it joins, increasing its hold as a favorite text-book in schools of medicine and law, rendering it even more useful to physicians in practice, and lawyers in the preparation of briefs and confirming its previous acceptance as an authority, by all English-speaking judicial tribunals. Since the issuance of the previous edition a strong impulse has been given to Forensic Medicine, by the International Congress of Medical Jurisprudence, by the Congress of Medical Jurisprudence of New York, 1895, and also by the special development of medico-legal Surgery in various societies. The present time, therefore, is most auspicious for the appearance of this new edit-ion, and it is fortunate that the demand for it comes at a time when these important advances can be represented. The increasing frequency of damage cases renders this department of medico-legal Surgery of growing importance. The eleventh American edition included the admirable work with which Dr. Thomas Stevenson had enriched the twelfth English edi tion, and was a thorough revision of all previous American and Eng lish editions. This present issue aims to continue this work along the same lines to the present date.h; The Editor desires to express his thanks and obligations to Surg Gen. George M. Sternberg, of the U. S. Army; Deputy surg.-gen. D. L. Huntington, l. D., U. S. Army; Capt. Pilcher, U. S. Army. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Medical Jurisprudence, Forensic Medicine and Toxicology It is necessary for the practitioner to have a knowledge of the symp toms of the different poisons and their antidotes. As the enemies of the ma. Bad women, and ungrateful servants sometimes mix poison with food. On this account the cook should be of good family. Virtu ous, faithful, and not covetous, nor subject to anger. Pride. Or laziness. The practitioner should have like qualifies. With an intimate knowledge of poisons: and should examine the food to be eaten by a raja in the cooking room. This should be large, airy. Light, and sur rounded with faithful servants. And no one should be allowed to enter unless he is first examined. A person who gives poison maybe recognized. He does not answer questions or they are evasive answers: he speaks nonsense, rubs the great toe along the ground. And shivers his face is discolored; he rubs the rootsof the hair with his fingers; and he tries by every means to leave the house. The food which is suspected should be first given to certain animals. And if they die, it is to be avoided. Apart from references to the venom of serpents, ' Mosaic history contains but few allusions to poison, ' but it is not probable that the Hebrews during the Egyptian captivity failed to acquire some knowledge of the action of poisons. The bitter water and water of gall, used by the Hebrews as an ordeal and for punishment, must have contained some poison, at least in those cases in which it possessed env eficacy.' Excerpt from Legal Medicine and Toxicology The subject of Legal Medicine is one which is too little understood and appreciated by the general practitioner and medical student. This book has been written to fill the need of a single volume, treating the subject from as practical a point of view as possible and with special reference to the needs of the busy practitioner who suddenly finds himself confronted with a medico-legal case. The author acknowledges his obligations to the many standard books on the subject and has tried to give due credit to the authors cited. The subject of Psychiatry has been omitted, as it has become so specialized that it should be treated as such by an expert. Excerpt from Lectures on Medical Jurisprudence While retaining the lectures on General Toxicology, the Editor has thought it better to omit Special Toxicology from the work, as this subject has been so often and so ably treated of in books devoted to that department of legal medicine. The Editor here desires to thank several kind friends for valuable assistance and suggestions in the preparation of this book for the press, especially Mr. George Cadenhead, procurator-fiscal of Aberdeen; Mr. J. M. Thomson, bar rister-at - law in Edinburgh; and Dr. John G. Hall of Aber deen; and also Mr. James Cadenhead of Aberdeen, who etched the illustrations for the work.
