Great strides have been made in the past several decades in clarifying brain behavior relationships. Most of the research has focused on the direct effects of a brain injury on behavioral functioning. Only recently has attention been given to documenting the mechanisms by which the disruption of various organs and systems compromise cerebral integrity and ultimately how such disruption affects cognition and behavior. It is this relatively new topic of inquiry, medical neuropsychology, that comprises the subject of this book. As will be noted, the chapters are organized on a system-by-system basis. Each of the organ systems contributes in a unique and specialized fashion to maintaining the integrity of brain functioning. Thus, the chapters by Prigatano and Levin, Stanton, and Ryan address the consequences of disturbed energy regulation and oxygen supply. Other chapters, specifically those by Tarter, Edwards, and Van Thiel and by Hart and Kreutzer examine the effects on the brain when the liver and kidney cannot efficiently cata bolize or eliminate cerebrotoxic substances. The effects of metabolic disrup tion mediated through pituitary and thyroid gland mechanisms illustrate the complex and synergistic relationship among the various organs and systems and the brain. As discussed by Gordon, Lee, and Tamres, diverse intercorre lated processes regulate physical growth, cerebral specialization of function, and complex cognitive capacities. Beckwith and Tucker underscore the in terrelationships among cognitive, affective, behavioral, and neurophysio logical processes pertinent to thyroid functioning. The book concludes with discussions of three rather specialized topics of current interest.

The goal of the second edition is to introduce the advance undergraduate or graduate student and more seasoned research scientists in any of the allied health sciences to a wide array of methodological and biostatistical issues, as they occur in the context of both published and ongoing research. Some sixty-four articles published between 1992 and 2002 have been selected from the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Neuropsychology, The Clinical Neuropsychologist, and Child Neuropsychology and reproduced in this volume. While building upon a working knowledge and understanding of the basic univariate data analytic techniques and the research designs to which they apply, the approach to the more complex multivariate techniques is presented primarily at a conceptual and essentially non-mathematical level. While the issue of the complexity of some of the more recent and standard approaches to data analytic strategies, and their important role to specific research designs is important to convey, there remains an even more fundamental issue of whether the results of correctly applied data analytic strategies make any practical or clinical sense, above and beyond their having reached levels of "statistical significance". These critical issues are addressed throughout various commentaries that the editors make at appropriate points in the text. For a period of some fifteen years following completion of my internship training in clinical psychology (1950-1951) at the Washington University School of Medicine and my concurrent successful navigation through that school's neuroanatomy course, clinical work in neuropsychology for me and the psychologists of my generation consisted almost exclusively of trying to help our physician colleagues differentiate patients with neurologic from those with psychiatric disorders. In time, experience led all of us from the several disciplines involved in this enterprise to the conclusion that the crude diag nostic techniques available to us circa 1945-1965 had garnered us little valid information upon which to base such complex, differential diagnostic decisions. It now is gratifying to look back and review the remarkable progress that has occurred in the field of clinical neuropsychology in the four decades since I was a graduate student. In the late 1940s such pioneers as Ward Halstead, Alexander Luria, George Yacorzynski, Hans-Lukas Teuber, and Arthur Benton already were involved in clinical studies that, by the late 1960s, would markedly have improved the quality of clinical practice. However, the only psychological tests that the clinical psychologist of my immediate post-Second World War generation had as aids for the diagnosis of neurologically based conditions involving cognitive deficit were such old standbys as the Wechsler Bellevue, Rorschach, Draw A Person, Bender Gestalt, and Graham Kendall Memory for Designs Test.
