Iman dan takhayul adalah saudara kembar. Meskipun yang pertama menuntun umat manusia pada cita-citanya yang paling luhur dan yang kedua hanya memberi kita karikatur pengetahuan manusia, keduanya adalah anak-anak dari keluarga yang sama. Keduanya bermula dari rasa tidak memadainya ilmu pengetahuan manusia dalam kaitannya dengan fenomena alam. Kenyataan bahwa proses terpenting dalam kehidupan organik tidak dapat ditelusuri sampai ke asal muasalnya, namun penyelidikannya akan segera mengarah pada titik penolakan yang sangat besar terhadap analisis lebih lanjut, selalu menimbulkan perasaan impotensi dan ketergantungan dalam pikiran manusia. . Kesadaran akan ketergantungan pada faktor-faktor yang sepenuhnya berada di luar pemahaman manusia telah memunculkan kebutuhan metafisik untuk merefleksikan faktor-faktor misterius ini, dan membawanya ke dalam jangkauan pemahaman manusia.
