Now published in two volumes to accommodate new chapters on the many advances in understanding and treatment options, this set of volumes represents the definitive reference on inflammatory bowel disease, a spectrum of diseases that is receiving increasing attention as our understanding of the etiological factors increases and diagnostic tools are refined. Basic research accelerated at the beginning of this decade and is now yielding new, more targeted treatments than were available just a few years ago. Volume 1 is on IBD and Ulcerative Colitis, and Volume 2 is on IBD and Crohn's Disease. All areas that were covered in the 2nd edition have been expanded and updated. New sections include the rapidly expanding knowledge of genetics and the role of the intestinal flora and environmental factors in etiology and pathogenesis. Among the 168 chapters, there are 20 on biologic therapies and 30 on surgical management. The consultant/authors clearly state their approach to important issues, such as the duration of immunomodulator and of anti-TNF-a use and the options for managing isolated low-grade dysplasia. A strong focus on the individual patient is woven throughout both volumes, including the benefits and risks of potentially life-altering therapies and surgeries. Entire sections detail concerns about the well-being of each person. This book provides information for health professionals who help both pediatric and adult patients navigate through the lifelong shadow of a chronic, probably genetically determined ordeal.

Inflammatory bowel disease - i.e. ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease - not only creates significant patient morbidity but also imposes a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge to the physician in charge of these patients. Since the development of sulphasalazine by Dr Nanna Svartz in Sweden half a century ago, important improvements in the prognosis of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease have been achieved. This book makes an attempt to present and discuss some of the most recent advances in diagnostic procedures and therapeutic approaches to inflammatory bowel disease with special respect to Crohn's disease. Although the fmal diagnosis of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease is generally based on endoscopic, histological or X-ray examinations, nuclear medicine and its imaging procedures have established their place in certain aspects of inflammatory bowel disease. One chapter of this book is dedicated accordingly to the indications of nuclear diagnostic procedures in the clinical setting. Sulphasalazine has been the mainstay of medical therapy in ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease of the colon. Recently 5-aminosalicylic acid has been discovered to be its active compound and sulphapyridine was found to be the component responsible for most of the adverse effects of sulpha salazine. It is not surprising that many studies have investigated 5-amino salicylic acid as a single therapeutic agent in inflammatory bowel disease.

Crohn’s Disease: Basic Principles provides a comprehensive and state-of-the-art overview of the current diagnosis and treatment strategies for Crohn’s disease. Care of these patients and clinical conditions can be quite complex and often require a multidisciplinary approach. Sections of the book are based on the most current, evidenced-based resources and have been structured to review the etiology and diagnosis of Crohn’s disease, discuss advances in medical and surgical treatment, illustrate emerging technologies impacting the care of patients with Crohn’s disease, and examine functional and quality of life outcomes in this patient population. The text reviews our understanding of the influence of molecular and genetic factors in the development and pattern of Crohn’s disease. Current methods of diagnosis and strategies in the medical management of patients with Crohn’s disease are evaluated including the use of biologic agents. Resection and bowel sparing techniques for primary and recurrent disease as well as advances in endoscopy and laparoscopy are discussed in detail. In addition, factors influencing the quality of life of patients with Crohn’s disease are examined including nutrition, enterostomal care, fertility, and sexual function. Written by recognized experts in their field, Crohn’s Disease: Basic Principles highlights the integrated multidimensional aspect of caring for patients with Crohn’s disease and will be of great value to colon and rectal surgeons, general surgeons, gastroenterologists, internists, as well as fellows and upper level residents in training training.

In recent years, epidemiological studies have shown a significant increase of incidences regarding ulcerative colitis (UC) in most regions of the world. At present, a common therapeutic modality for inflammatory bowel disorders is the use of anti-inflammatory agents, including sulfasalazine and acetylsalicylic acid, steroid hormone, and other immunosuppressive agents. Most of these treatments are symptomatic and palliative because the etiology of the disease is not yet established. As a result of no proper drug available to treat UC, patients with UC are at a high risk of developing colitis-associated cancer (CAC). It is necessary to understand the genetic and molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of UC and CAC that lead to the path of new drug discoveries. Diagnostic and Treatment Methods for Ulcerative Colitis and Colitis-Associated Cancer provides innovative insights that describe the fundamental understanding of UC and CAC and the molecular mechanisms behind the etiology as well as modern diagnostic methods that are employed in UC and CAC. Current prevention and therapeutic strategies practiced in the pre-clinical level are also discussed. The content within this publication examines alternative medicine and dietary intervention and drug delivery techniques. It is designed for healthcare professionals, physicians, academicians, researchers, R&D organizations, and medical students involved in drug discovery and clinical and therapeutic research.
