For many years, practicing clinical medicine, we continue to describe and share nature's wonderful creation - medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis). And at first we are always met with shock, doubt and distrust regardless of the patient's age, intellect and profession. It is understandable, however, that both the patient and the specialist educated within the modern medical establishments find it hard to believe that some 'worms' can have significant benefit on treatment of diseases. Medicinal leeches are not an advancement in genetic engineering and nanotechnology, or some new achievement in engineering and artificial intelligence; they are not mentioned in fancy advertisements of transnational pharmaceutical companies. It is hard to believe that some annelid worms (Annelides) can help us treat severe traumas, acute otitis, artritis or panaritium, help you forget about dreadful hemorrhoids, restore the lightness in your heavy legs, and, perhaps, even help save you from the fate of a lifelong disability...This book is the further development of our project and plan to distribute our professional knowledge of Hirudotherapy (Medicinal Leech Therapy) among the Medical community and the different World nations.

Armed with razor-sharp teeth and capable of drinking many times its volume of blood, the leech is an unlikely cure for ill health. Yet that is exactly the role this worm-like parasite has played in both Western and Eastern medicine throughout history. In this book, Robert G. W. Kirk and Neil Pemberton explore how the leech surfaces in radically different spheres. The ancients used them in humeral medicine to bring the four humors of the body—blood, phlegm, and black and yellow bile—back into balance. Today, leeches are used in plastic and reconstructive surgery to help reattach severed limbs and remove pools of blood before it kills tissue. Leeches have also been used in a nineteenth-century meteorological barometer and a twentieth-century biomedical tool that helped win a Nobel Prize. Kirk and Pemberton also reveal the dark side of leeches as they are portrayed in fiction, film, and popular culture. From Bram Stoker’s Dracula to a video game player’s nemesis, the leech is used to represent the fears of science run amok. Leech shines new light on one of humanity’s most enduring and unlikely companions.

The Decline Of Therapeutic Bloodletting And The Collapse Of Traditional Medicine written by K. Codell Carter and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-08 with Medical categories.

Over the course of a single generation, without significant discussion or debate, a key practice of traditional medicine was almost completely abandoned in mid-nineteenth-century Europe. K. Codell Carter's book describes how and why bloodletting was abandoned, noting that it was part of a process in which innovation was required so that modern scientific medicine could begin. This book is a masterful study on the collapse of a traditional medical practice. Bloodletting had been a prominent medical therapy in early nineteenth-century Europe and can be traced back to Greek and Roman physicians. The Hippocratic corpus contains several discussions of bloodletting. Galen, the most famous physician in classical antiquity, wrote tracts explaining and defending the practice. It was employed in ancient Egypt and is the most commonly mentioned therapy in the Babylonian Talmud. Indeed, it was practiced in virtually every part of the ancient world. Even though the practice abruptly ceased, there was little argument against it or reason to believe it ineffective. In reality, bloodletting actually worked. However, the rise of modern medicine required not just a change in how disease and causation were conceived, but also a change in the role of medicine in society. It has been claimed that the collapse of traditional medicine was a precondition for the rise of modern medicine, but there has been little support for this assertion before now. Carter provides this missing support. The result is a fascinating study in the history of medical practice and social expectations.
