Since the 1980s there has been a continual engagement with the history and the place of western medicine in colonial settings and non-western societies. In relation to South Asia, research on the role of medicine has focussed primarily on regions under direct British administration. This book looks at the ‘princely states’ that made up about two fifths of the subcontinent. Two comparatively large states, Mysore and Travancore – usually considered as ‘progressive’ and ‘enlightened’ – and some of the princely states of Orissa – often described as ‘backward’ and ‘despotic’ – have been selected for analysis. The authors map developments in public health and psychiatry, the emergence of specialised medical institutions, the influence of western medicine on indigenous medical communities and their patients and the interaction between them. Exploring contentious issues currently debated in the existing scholarship on medicine in British India and other colonies, this book covers the ‘indigenisation’ of health services; the inter-relationship of colonial and indigenous paradigms of medical practice; the impact of specific political and administrative events and changes on health policies. The book also analyses British medical policies and the Indian reactions and initiatives they evoked in different Indian states. It offers new insights into the interplay of local adaptations with global exchanges between different national schools of thought in the formation of what is often vaguely, and all too simply, referred to as 'western' or 'colonial' medicine. A pioneering study of health and medicine in the princely states of India, it provides a balanced appraisal of the role of medicine during the colonial era. "Public health services, which reduce a population's exposure to disease through such measures as sanitation and vector control, are an essential part of a country's development infrastructure. In the industrial world and East Asia, systematic public health efforts raised labor productivity and life expectancies well before modern curative technologies became widely available, and helped set the stage for rapid economic growth and poverty reduction. The enormous business and other costs of the breakdown of these services are illustrated by the current global epidemic of avian flu, emanating from poor poultry-keeping practices in a few Chinese villages. For various reasons, mostly of political economy, public funds for health services in India have been focused largely on medical services, and public health services have been neglected. This is reflected in a virtual absence of modern public health regulations and of systematic planning and delivery of public health services. Various organizational issues also militate against the rational deployment of personnel and funds for disease control. There is strong capacity for dealing with outbreaks when they occur, but not to prevent them from occurring. Impressive capacity also exists for conducting intensive campaigns, but not for sustaining these gains on a continuing basis after the campaign. This is illustrated by the near eradication of malaria through highly organized efforts in the 1950s, and its resurgence when attention shifted to other priorities such as family planning. When a good system is given, the life expectancy increases, because many diseases are recognized earlier if a doctor is visited. With the growth of the population the significance of the health sector increases continuously. Even when no medical treatment is needed, many people feel safer when they have the guarantee to get one if it is required. This gives a secure feeling to the inhabitants of the country. It makes the citizens believe in their own government. Although a well-organized health care system has so many advantages for all of the population, sadly most of the Indians do not have medical insurance at all. Good health care needs to be affordable and available for every single inhabitant of a country. Therefore you need proper infrastructure and a very thorough organization. In my thesis paper I will explain the current situation in medical care in India and the problems connected with it. I will list the reasons that led to this state and picture their influence on India. After that, I want to shortly summarize the problem India has with its healthcare system. As a next step, I will be explaining the German healthcare system with the German health insurances. In addition I want to list some advantages and disadvantages the German insurance system has. In the next paragraphs I will check whether the German system is adaptable to India to improve the Indian health care situation. For that two different projects in India will be explained to illustrate the attempt to improve the system. The answer whether the German health care system would be possible in India will be stated in the last part of the paper, the conclusion.
