Molly Bonner is wary about putting herself in a doctor's hands -- especially as a lover. On the cusp of forty, Molly, reluctantly attending her friend Felicia's party, knows the hidden agenda includes fixing her up with a recently widowed M.D. Felicia herself is the long-suffering mistress of a married San Francisco surgeon, one of the most pompous womanizers Molly has ever met. She has long since decided that dating medicine men is a pill she'd rather not swallow. But now this tall, anomalous middle-aged doctor, with his attentive ways, seems the exception. It just so happens then that Molly, long bothered by headaches, is diagnosed with a rare malignancy. She needs a doctor in the house...or so she thinks. As Molly begins the long journey toward the recovery of her self, Alice Adams once again paints a portrait of modern affairs so sharply observant that it draws blood. More deftly than ever, inMedicine Menshe shows us the source of the illness -- and the remedy -- for the malady called love.

Excerpt from Our Medicine Men A part of these essays has appeared in "The Century Magazine," and their publication has aroused the profound displeasure of many serious and possibly important persons. The pieces have been variously denounced as destructive, ignorant, rotten, wrong-headed, and detrimental to progress. This writer deplores these criticisms, for, while it is true that he had no intention to moralize or to improve the world, he did attempt to recount in a fair and restrained manner the reactions which twelve years of contact with medicine men have called forth in him. He has made an earnest effort to be restrained, but, try as he would, it was impossible to avoid introducing a faintly ribald flavor into his writings. He hastens to assure his readers that this has crept in not because medicine is in essence wholly ribald or ridiculous. On the other hand, he believes that of the five great professions it stands next to that of engineering in its contributions to progress. The ribaldry has appeared by reason of a slight, but incurable, clownishness and impishness of his own mind. Willow Taylor lives in a castle with large walls and iron fences. But this is no ordinary castle. It's called Heartstone Psychiatric Hospital and it houses forty other patients. It has nurses with mean faces and techs with permanent frowns. It has a man, as well. A man who is cold and distant. Whose voice drips with authority. And whose piercing gray eyes hide secrets, and maybe linger on her face a second too long. Willow isn't supposed to look deep into those eyes. She isn't supposed to try to read his tightly-leashed emotions. Neither is she supposed to touch herself at night, imagining his powerful voice and that cold but beautiful face. No, Willow Taylor shouldn't be attracted to Simon Blackwood at all. Because she's a patient and he's her doctor. Her psychiatrist. The medicine man.

The Medicine Men written by Thomas H. Lewis and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992-03-01 with History categories.

For the residents of the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota, mainstream medical care is often supplemented or replaced by a host of traditional practices: theøSun Dance, the yuwipi sing, the heyok?a ceremony, herbalism, the Sioux Religion, the peyotism of the Native American Church, and other medicines, or sources of healing. Thomas H. Lewis, a psychiatrist and medical anthropologist, describes those practices as he encountered them in the late 1960s and early 1970s. During many months he studied with leading practitioners. He describes the healers?their techniques, personal histories and qualities, the problems addressed and results obtained?and examines past as well as present practices. The result is an engrossing account that may profoundly affect the way readers view the dynamics of therapy for mind and body.
