Die "Medienstadt" bezeichnet Kultur- und Medien-Zentren auf verschiedensten geographischen Maßstabsebenen - sie umfasst lokale Cluster der Kulturproduktion im urbanen Raum bis hin zu den Kulturmetropolen des globalen Städtesystems. Die Medienwirtschaft kann heute als "Leit-Industrie" und Vorreiter sozioökonomischer Strukturveränderungen betrachtet werden, indem sie institutionelle Formen der kreativen Produktion, der zwischenbetrieblichen Arbeitsteilung und räumlichen Organisationsbeziehungen sowie der Kreuz- und Quer-Vermarktung von neuen Produkten in immer kürzeren Zyklen hervorbringt, die künftig viele Zweige gesellschaftlicher Arbeit prägen werden. In ausgewählten Großstädten formieren sich urbane Cluster der Kulturproduktion, die ihre Dynamik aus dem Zusammenspiel von wissens- und design-intensiven Aktivitätszweigen im urbanen Raum beziehen. Die Kulturökonomie ist zugleich von Globalisierungsprozessen geprägt, wobei globale Medienkonzerne mit ihrem weltweiten Netz von Niederlassungen und Tochterfirmen die urbanen Cluster der Kulturproduktion miteinander verbinden, und die in führenden Medienstädten aufgespürten Trends oder Lebensstilelemente kommerziell verwerten. Auf dieser Grundlage formiert sich ein System der globalen Medienstädte, die eine wichtige Triebkraft für Globalisierungsprozesse in Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft darstellen.

We are now living through a period of knowledge capitalism in which, as Castells put it, 'the action of knowledge upon knowledge is the main source of productivity.' In the face of such transformation, the economic, social and institutional contours of contemporary capitalism are being reshaped. At the heart of this world are an emergent set of economies, regions, institutions and peoples central of the flows and translations of knowledge. This book provides an interdisciplinary review of the triad of knowledge, space, economy on entering the twenty-first century. Drawing on a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, the first part of the book comprises a set of statements by leading authors on the role of knowledge in capitalism. Thereafter, the remaining two parts of the book explore the landscape of knowledge capitalism through a series of analyses of knowledge in action within a range of economic, political and cultural contexts.
