This volume is the first comprehensive collection to gather together the records of the medieval Bulgarian centuries in English translation. Stone annals, works of religious instruction, anti-heretical treatises, apocrypha, royal charters, as well as numerous graffiti and marginal notes, shed abundant light onto a major cultural tradition of the European southeast from the seventh to the fifteenth century. Produced by Bulgarians of all walks of life, the evidence testifies, among other things, to the unique features of Bulgarian historical consciousness, political custom, and religious sensibility as well as the country’s conformity to the broad currents of medieval Europe’s cultural development and evolution. The volume furnishes a fundamental reading for all those interested in the historical destiny of the “other” Europe.

This volume contains 24 papers on the history of art and letters in medieval Bulgaria that focus mainly on the Bulgarian-Byzantine cultural dialogue. These papers were written by Bulgarian scholars during the period of 1991-2012, and most of them were previously published in Bulgarian periodicals. A few of the papers were written specifically for this volume, and all of the material originally written in Bulgarian was translated into English especially for this publication. The book is divided into three topical sections, and each section begins with an overview of the contribution of Bulgarian scholarship to the study of medieval Bulgarian and Byzantine cultural ties in that particular subject. The first section contains nine papers on art and architecture. Section two includes four papers on Byzantine philosophy and theology. The third section is dedicated to medieval Bulgarian and Byzantine Greek manuscripts and texts. The volume ends with an annotated bibliography of selected publications in Bulgarian concerning medieval Bulgarian and Byzantine art, culture, and literature.

Through Bulgarian and Ottoman documents, marginalia, travelers' accounts, art, and numerous secondary documents, the seventeenth century--considered by historians, as the nadir of Bulgarian national history--is examined as to the question of the Slavic society's continued existence despite centuries of foreign political, social and spiritual domination by the Ottoman Empire. The first part outlines the consequences for Bulgarian history of the Muslim Ottoman conquest. The second details the nature of the culture and the forms of expression. The third part consists of an overview of documented seventeenth century Bulgarian Orthodox expression.

The Bulgarian Byzantine Wars For Early Medieval Balkan Hegemony written by Dennis P. Hupchick and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-10 with History categories.

This book provides an interpretive narrative of the wars fought by Bulgaria against the Byzantine Empire for dominant control of the Balkan Peninsula during the early medieval era. Over a span of two centuries, from the early ninth through the early eleventh, and under the leadership of the Bulgarian rulers Krum, Simeon I, and Samuil, those conflicts evolved from simple confrontations for territorial possession into a life-or-death struggle for imperial precedence within the Orthodox world then emerging in Eastern Europe—a struggle that the Bulgarians ultimately lost. The primary focus is on Bulgaria, rather than Byzantium, and an effort is made to provide a historically reliable chronology of the assorted campaigns. The various belligerents’ military organizations, defensive technologies, armaments, and tactics are surveyed in an introduction to the main narrative. A prelude chapter sets the stage for the hegemonic conflict, which was divided into three distinct phases by interludes of relative peace between the contending parties, during which Bulgaria’s domestic, foreign, and cultural developments shaped the nature and conduct of the fighting in each successive phase.

This bilingual (English and Bulgarian), richly illustrated book presents a selection of finds from the Stara Bulgaria Collection, offering a wealth of new source material for the study of Balkanic connections of the archaeological legacy of the Avar period and the 10th-11th centuries of the Carpathian Basin, the comparison of the metalwork from the Carpathian Basin and Bulgaria, and their the cultural implications. The Stara Bulgaria Collection is made up of 4210 items, most of which are belt fittings, costume accessories, horse gear fittings and buckles. Most of these objects date from the 6th-11th centuries, with some coming from earlier periods (Scythian, Thracian, Roman and early Migration period) and some from later ages (12th-18th centuries). Even though the exact findspots remain unknown, most are known to have come to light somewhere in north-eastern Bulgaria. The Collection is the fruit of an almost one and a half decades long collecting activity. Our research group did not undertake to present the entire collection; however, the 2557 pieces described and published in the present volume offer a representative selection of the finds, with a focus on the early medieval period.
