This two-volume work explains in detail the religious and spiritual significance of the temple by means of copious references to Sanskrit texts--both sacred and scientific. It depicts the Hindu Temple as not merely a heap of brick, stone or wood but a visible symbol of aspirations of pious men and women, the throbbings of their hearts in religious fervor and their endeavor for the attainment of salvation. The first four parts of the work are devoted to the philosophy of temple architecture. Part V deals with the origin and development of the temple from the Vedic fire altars to the latest forms. Part VI discusses the pyramidal and curvilinear superstructures in the main varieties of the Sikhara, the Sikhara enmeshed in Gavaksas and the composite Sikhara. Part VII describes the proportional measurements and the rhythmic disposition of the garbha-grha and the vertical section. It discusses the proportions of the Mandapa and the types of temples described in ancient Sanskrit texts like the Brhatsamhita and the Samaranganasutradhara. This most comprehensive and authoritative treatise of ancient Indian Temple Architecture will prove of immense help to the students of ancient Indian culture. Contents (Vol. 1) PART I: The Site, Part II: The Plan, Part III: Plan and Supernal Man, Part IV: The Substances of which the temple is built, Names and Origins of the Temple, Part VI. The Superstructure, Part VII: Proportionate Measurement and Varieties of the Temple (Volume 2) Part VIII: The Images of the Temple, Explanation of Plates, Appendix, Sources, Index, Plates I-IXXX.

Illustrations: 21 Maps Description: Royal endowments to Brahmanas have been interpreted either as a factor of political integration or disintegration in Indian history. Through the first thorough presentation and analysis of the epigraphic data from Orissa, this study argues that the period AD 300-1147 was one of intensive state formation and political development in which royal grants played an important integrative role. During this period, Brahmanas, many of whom were ritual specialists associated with the Yajurveda, emerged as land-holders endowed by royal decree with privileged control over land. Despite the consistent appearance of sectarian affiliations in the royal inscriptions, temples did not benefit from royal patronage on a comparable scale. Until the close of the period under review, it was the gift of land to Brahmanas, not the royally-endowed temple establishment that was a major basis of royal legitimation and political integration in Orissa.

Analyzing the ways in which ideas of heroic discourse and the socio-religious and political needs of the period moulded iconography, this book explores the evolution of the iconography of the early mediaeval Hindu temples of the Indian peninsula, over the course of the sixth-twelfth centuries C.E. In order to study the socio-religious and political atmosphere in which the early mediaeval temple iconography grew and developed its specific forms, the author makes use of the inscriptions, archaeological and the literary materials ranging from the fourth centuries B.C.E. to the thirteenth century C.E., as these give an idea of the continuities and discontinuities in the ideas of heroic and political discourses which lie at the back of the visual art forms that they created. Of particular interest are the royal charters, issued in Sanskrit and Tamil, the religious narratives from the Sanskrit epics and the Puranas, iconographic canons that form a part of the religious texts known as the Agamas, written in Sanskrit, the court literature of the early mediaeval period and the early historical Sangam Tamil literature, apart from the archaeological material from the Indian peninsula. The author focuses particularly on exploring the ideas of power current in the society that created the narrative iconography of the period and the region studied.

Orissa, one of the ancient most seats of Indian civilization, abounds in temples and sculptures of very high artistic value. A careful examination of the monuments found in that region will convince anybody that the Aryan style in its purest form was prevalent there only in the whole of India. No apology is therefore needed to study the architectural remains of Orissa, which the learned author has done in the present volume. The author has, besides describing quite a few architectural remains in the Puri District in Orissa, tried to give a scientific exposition of the principles of architecture and sculpture obtaining there. Though he has raised many points of controversial nature, he spared no pains to illustrate his opinions by concrete examples. In the second chapter of the book, a brief outline of the political history of the political history of the province has been furnished, with which its architectural history is intimately connected. The principles of Aryan architecture and sculpture have been illustrated in the fifth and the sixth chapters while they have been illustrated in the last three chapters. Chapter V deals with the main features and the subsidiary parts of Orissan temples and the relative potions of different sections in the general ground plan. In subsequent chapters, the author has put forward formulas for the ratio of the height of the Vimana to the length of the base and of the thickness of the walls relative to the height and proportion of the edifice to be raised, the plinth pedestal, wall construction and bonds; the author has also made useful observations on the deities represented in the temples of the Saivas, Vaisnavas and Souras. Briefly, the work is a valuable contribution to the subject.
