The Divine Office--the cycle of daily worship other than the Mass--is the richest source of liturgical texts and music from the Latin Middle Ages. However, its richness, the great diversity of its manuscripts, and its many variations from community to community have made it difficult to study, and it remains largely unexplored terrain. This volume is a practical guide to the Divine Office for students and scholars throughout the field of medieval studies. The book surveys the many questions related to the Office and presents the leading analytical tools and research methods now used in the field. Beginning with the Office in the early Middle Ages, the book covers manuscript sources and their contents; regional developments and variations; the relationship between the Office, the Mass, and other ceremonies and repertories; and the deep links between the Office and medieval hagiography. The book concludes with a discussion of recent technical advances for handling the enormous amounts of evidence on the Office and its performance, in particular CANTUS, the vast electronic database developed by Ruth Steiner of Catholic University for the analysis of chant repertories. The Divine Office in the Latin Middle Ages is an essential resource for anyone studying medieval liturgy. Its accessible style and broad coverage make it an important basic reference for a wide range of students and scholars in art history, religious studies, social history, literature, musicology, and theology.

Excerpt from The Mass in Sweden: Its Development From the Latin Rite From 1531 to 1917 The present volume is a small contribution to the study of the Swedish liturgy, and gives a brief survey of the development of the office of the mass in Sweden from pre-Reformation times until to-day. Five mass offices are reproduced. The first is a transcription of the medieval Latin mass, which has been done in some detail for the purpose of illustrating the fact that the modern mass has preserved the form, and in many respects the spirit, of the medieval rite. English translations of the remaining four vernacular masses are set down alongside the Swedish originals. The "variables" are supplied for the Easter festival. In the case of John III's "Red Book," a few copies of which survive, the Latin text is here reprinted for the first time since the sixteenth century. In every case the text of the mass has been so arranged as to indicate the divisions into which the mass has been cast during the last millennium. These divisions may be tabulated thus: - 1. The Preparation for the Mass. 2. The Induction. 3. The Lections. 4. The Offertory. 5. The Preface. 6. The Canon of the Action. 7. The Lords Prayer. 8. The Communion. Although the pre-anaphoral intercession appears in two of the vernacular masses, it is not included in the above scheme, since it is foreign to the plan of the Roman mass. Law And Liturgy In The Latin Church 5th 12th Centuries written by Roger Edward Reynolds and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with Canon law categories.

The two themes brought together in this volume - the canon law and the liturgy of the early medieval Latin Church - have close links, as these articles reveal. At the basis of this lies that fact that the collections and manuscripts with which Professor Reynolds is concerned provide the source material for both fields of study. In the book particular emphasis is given to the Irish Collection canonum hibernensis and its many derivatives, to works from Carolingian Salzburg and eleventh-century Southern Italy, and to liturgical collections. The whole illustrates the need for liturgiologists to be aware of the riches in medieval legal sources, and for legal historians to take account of the wealth of liturgical material that is a principal ingredient of the law of the Church; and demonstrates how much one field can contribute to understanding the development and to the dating of the other.

This volume seeks to address the needs of teachers and advanced students who are preparing classes on the Middle Ages or who find themselves confounded in their studies by reference to the various liturgies that were fundamental to the lives of medieval peoples. In a series of essays, scholars of the liturgy examine The Shape of the Liturgical Year, Particular Liturgies, The Physical Setting of the Liturgy, The Liturgy and Books, and Liturgy and the Arts. A concluding essay, which originated in notes left behind by the late C. Clifford Flanigan, seeks to open the field, to examine liturgy within the larger and more inclusive category of ritual. The essays are intended to be introductory but to provide the basic facts and the essential bibliography for further study. They approach particular problems assuming a knowledge of medieval Europe but little expertise in liturgical studies per se.

The Liturgy In Medieval England written by Richard W. Pfaff and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-09-24 with History categories.

This book provides a comprehensive historical treatment of the Latin liturgy in medieval England. Richard Pfaff constructs a history of the worship carried out in churches - cathedral, monastic, or parish - primarily through the surviving manuscripts of service books, and sets this within the context of the wider political, ecclesiastical, and cultural history of the period. The main focus is on the mass and daily office, treated both chronologically and by type, the liturgies of each religious order and each secular 'use' being studied individually. Furthermore, hagiographical and historiographical themes - respectively, which saints are prominent in a given witness and how the labors of scholars over the last century and a half have both furthered and, in some cases, impeded our understandings - are explored throughout. The book thus provides both a narrative account and a reference tool of permanent value.
