"The 24 medieval manuscripts in the Buchanan collection were presented to the Bodleian in two instalments, in 1939 and 1941, by Mrs. Emily Octavia Buchanan, in accordance with the wishes of her late husband, Thomas Ryburn Buchanan. The Keeper of Western Manuscripts' letter of thanks referred to 'this munificent benefaction ... the most remarkable and valuable accession to our illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages ... for many years'. The collection, with its preponderance of late medieval devotional books from France, the Netherlands and renaissance Italy, is typical of the small private libraries of later 19th-century English amateur collectors. What makes it remarkable is the inclusion of manuscripts notable for their early and fine bindings, their humanistic texts and their provenance. Mrs. Buchanan's gift also included later manuscripts, for the most part notable for their bindings."--
