Manuscripts in Transition. Recycling Manuscripts, Texts and Images gathers together some 40 contributions by art historians specialised in research into book illuminations from the time of Charlemagne to Charles V's Habsburg empire (ca. 800-ca. 1550). The accent is mainly on the art of the illumination in the Gothic, Burgundian and Post-Burgundian periods. This anthology is the product of an international conference held in Brussels in 2002 in connection with the exhibition Medieval Mastery: Book Illumination from Charlemagne to Charles the Bold (800-1475) (Leuven, Stedelijk Museum Vander Kelen-Mertens). The central focus of the conference was the systematic re-use of texts and images in the Middle Ages. The examination of this theme resulted in the present fascinating series of articles.

Change Was a Difficult Concept in Medieval Society; the Introduction of new or different ideas and approaches was generally viewed with suspicion, and could leave an innovator open to the charge of novitas, or innovation, or even heresy. Yet, change did occur. Rose Walker investigates the mechanism of change in the Middle Ages through the study of one particular innovation: the shift from the Mozarabic to the Roman liturgy in Spain after 1080. Walker focuses on the joint northern Spanish kingdoms of Leon and Castile to examine how the liturgical shift, initiated by the reforms of Pope Gregory VII, was reflected in the liturgical manuscripts of the time. By analysing the text and images in manuscripts of the Mozarabic and Roman liturgies produced in Spain before, during, and after the change in liturgy, she demonstrates how the presentation and decoration of liturgical texts helps to determine ways in which change was expressed, and to illuminate the perspective of those who had to put it into practice.

Manuscripts, Market and the Transition to Print in Late Medieval Brittany surveys the production and marketing of non-monastic manuscripts and printed books over 150 years in late medieval Brittany, from the accession of the Montfort family to the ducal crown in 1364 to the duchy's formal assimilation by France in 1532. Brittany, as elsewhere, experienced the shift of manuscript production from monasteries to lay scriptoria and from rural settings to urban centers, as the motivation for copying the word in ink on parchment evolved from divine meditation to personal profit. Through her analysis of the physical aspects of Breton manuscripts and books, parchment and paper, textual layouts, scripts and typography, illumination and illustration, Diane Booton exposes previously unexplored connections between the tangible cultural artifacts and the society that produced, acquired and valued them. Innovatively, Booton's discussion incorporates archival research into the prices, wages and commissions associated with the manufacture of the works under discussion to shed new light on their economic and personal value.

In 2006, 500 years after his death, the Royal Library of Belgium organised an exhibition revealing treasures from the era of Philip the Fair (1478-1506), last duke of Burgundy. From the dissolution of the Carolingian empire to the onset of the so-called 12th-century Renaissance, the transformative 10th–11th centuries witnessed the production of a significant number of illuminated manuscripts from present-day France, Belgium, Spain, and Italy, alongside the better-known works from Anglo-Saxon England and the Holy Roman Empire. While the hybrid styles evident in book painting reflect the movement and re-organization of people and codices, many of the manuscripts also display a highly creative engagement with the art of the past.
