Las dictaduras de la segunda mitad del siglo XX coexistieron con procesos de expansión y consolidación de la televisión. Los Estados autoritarios conjugaron de maneras complejas los objetivos de un orden político basado en principios de jerarquía, tradicionalismo y paternalismo autoritario con un modelo de entretenimiento de masas que tensionaba esos valores. La televisión profundizó procesos de globalización, provocando la coexistencia de la suspensión del Estado de derecho con lógicas liberales del ejercicio de la comunicación, a la vez que resultó una oportunidad para promover una imagen positiva de la situación interna de los países ante una audiencia global. Este y otros problemas nos llevan a preguntarnos: ¿Cuál fue el vínculo de la televisión con los proyectos políticos, sociales, culturales y mediáticos [LO1] impulsados por las experiencias autoritarias de enorme violencia estatal del pasado reciente en el Cono Sur? Y, ya en los períodos posautoritarios, ¿cómo colaboró este medio en la construcción de lo memorable para las sociedades y qué tensiones se generaron en torno a sus rasgos distintivos de inmediatez, facilidad de lectura[LO2] , potencial emotivo y consumo masivo y doméstico? A través de catorce capítulos escritos por veinte investigadores de cuatro países, este libro recorre diferentes problemas en el cruce entre televisión y autoritarismos en perspectiva histórica, así como el rol de esta tecnología como vehículo de construcción de sentidos sobre el pasado.

Challenging the U.S.-Led War on Drugs explores the cases that have resisted the U.S. pressure to adopt a militarized approach to fight against drug trafficking in Latin America and the Caribbean. Through a sweeping narrative history from the recovery of democracy in 1983 to the present, Cutrona applies international relations and comparative politics theories to understand Argentina’s different trajectory vis-à-vis the rest of the region. The author demonstrates that in broad questions of vulnerability to U.S. pressure, external factors often play a secondary role in explaining either balancing/resistance or bandwagoning/acceptance of the U.S. security agenda in the Americas. Emphasizing the role of domestic-level politics, Cutrona identifies the subordination of the military to civilian oversight, the transition outcome, the system of check and balances, and the role of civil society actors such as social movements, epistemic communities, and norm entrepreneurs as Argentina’s most relevant sources explaining defection from Washington’s main dictates to combat drug trafficking.

La construcción de subjetividades femeninas en el contexto de la violencia en Argentina, Chile y Uruguay. Este libro explora la relación entre género y poder en la construcción de subjetividades femeninas en el contexto de violencia en Argentina, Chile y Uruguay. Presenta una serie de lecturas de cuentos, novelas, fotografías y películas del Cono Sur latinoamericano organizadas según la representación de cuatro tipos de cuerpos: el cuerpo violado, el cuerpo torturado, el cuerpo materno y el cuerpo ausente. Circulando entre los espacios privados y públicos, elcuerpo de la mujer se constituye como una metáfora a ser narrada como manifestación de la experiencia colectiva y, en particular, de los regímenes políticos represivos cuya marca lleva inscrita. Con el propósito de analizar cuestiones en torno a la representación, el cuerpo, el dolor, la familia, la memoria y la abyección, este libro recurre a las teorías feminista, psicoanalítica y de trauma y a los estudios culturales. Establece una serie de preguntas acerca de la representación, el rol del trauma y la memoria en la reconstrucción de discursos, los diferentes impactos de la violencia según los roles de género, la relación entre la representación de la violencia y los odiscursos -la pornografía entre ellos- y la conexión entre la violencia política y la violencia doméstica.
