The need to reflect, contemplate, and concentrate is an essential counterpoint to the rush of daily life and its surface details. This has been recognized since ancient times, and meditation in one form or another has been practiced through the centuries and across cultures, for reasons both sacred and mundane. In the modern world the motivations are more likely to be personal than religious, but the same dynamics apply in calming and focusing the mind. A prerequisite is the right physical space-somewhere to help set one's frame of mind and to hold back the distractions of the outside. Specifically for the purpose of meditation, the examples are from sources as varied and fascinating as contemporary Japanese tea-ceremony rooms, minimalist Western architecture, idiosyncratic chapels, artists' and writers' workspaces, and portable tented structures. The principles are all applicable to modern living, whether permanent or temporary, at home or in beautiful natural settings. With its crisp photography and inventive design, Meditative Spaces will appeal to a variety of readers, from architecture enthusiasts to those with an interest in Japanese style to anyone looking to find-and celebrate-serenity in today's hectic and rapidly paced world.

Imagining Women S Conventual Spaces In France 1600 1800 written by Barbara R. Woshinsky and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-05 with Literary Criticism categories.

Blending history and architecture with literary analysis, this ground-breaking study explores the convent's place in the early modern imagination. The author brackets her account between two pivotal events: the Council of Trent imposing strict enclosure on cloistered nuns, and the French Revolution expelling them from their cloisters two centuries later. In the intervening time, women within convent walls were both captives and refugees from an outside world dominated by patriarchal power and discourses. Yet despite locks and bars, the cloister remained "porous" to privileged visitors. Others could catch a glimpse of veiled nuns through the elaborate grills separating cloistered space from the church, provoking imaginative accounts of convent life. Not surprisingly, the figure of the confined religious woman represents an intensified object of desire in male-authored narrative. The convent also spurred "feminutopian" discourses composed by women: convents become safe houses for those fleeing bad marriages or trying to construct an ideal, pastoral life, as a counter model to the male-dominated court or household. Recent criticism has identified certain privileged spaces that early modern women made their own: the ruelle, the salon, the hearth of fairy tale-telling. Woshinsky's book definitively adds the convent to this list.

You may have experienced intense peace and stillness when sitting in a quiet room meditating. However for most of us this peace is shattered the minute we step out of that quiet room and are confronted with jealousy, anger, fear, and an ego-filled violent society. My question to you is: if you are unable to bring peace into the whole of your life – whether this be in your chaotic workplace dealing with angry and egoistic workmates, or at home dealing with adolescent children, does the peace that you experience when meditating have limited application in your life? If your answer, like mine, is ‘yes’, the question then becomes - how can you bring peace into your daily life so that you are able to live in this world free from fear, anger, jealousy, stress and anxiety? How can you exist in modern society as presence, space, peace, when you are surrounded by anger, fear, hatred and violence? How can you exist as a ‘space of peace’ moment to moment without getting dragged into the madness? How can you make Life a Meditation rather than your meditation being a 30 minute or one hour daily affair?Putting into practice any of the pointers mentioned in this book will help you become or be this ‘space of peace’. And in the process, you might discover that there is no need to sit in a room and meditate. You can be this ‘space of peace’ wherever you are - at a busy work place, a board meeting, at home cooking dinner, rushing to pick up your children, arriving late to the office, or even when you are taking a stroll in a park. You can be this moving ‘space of peace’ wherever you go.
