Storie di uomini in cammino” non propone soluzioni all’esodo biblico dei popoli che si spingono verso nazioni che dovrebbero essere accoglienti e solidali, ma sottopone ai lettori una serie di drammi individuali di giovani e non che hanno vissuto e subito, ne portano ancora oggi i segni sul loro corpo, violenze e costrizioni di ogni tipo per affidarsi al “mare della speranza”, il Mar Mediterraneo, per vivere da uomini liberi la loro vita. Il libro è da leggere senza avere pregiudizi o altro nei confronti di chi ha un colore diverso dalla nostra pelle, ma con ferma volontà di capire e vivere, anche leggendo poche pagine, un mondo non lontano ma diverso dal nostro mondo egoista ed insensibile alla richiesta di accoglienza di questi uomini e donne che si affidano al “mare della speranza”.

Il volume raccoglie un'ampia rassegna di scritti, in maggior parte inediti, in onore di Giuseppe Dato, professore ordinario di Tecnica e Pianificazione Urbanistica e Preside della facoltà di Architettura dell'Università degli Studi di Catania, con sede a Siracusa. Gli autori sono docenti e ricercatori italiani e stranieri, oltre ad alcuni allievi oggi impegnati nella pratica professionale, che hanno intrattenuto con Giuseppe Dato rapporti di collaborazione scientifica, didattica, professionale o di amicizia. I testi proposti abbracciano un'ampia gamma di temi: dalla pianificazione di area vasta agli studi sul paesaggio, dalla progettazione urbana alla storia della città e del territorio, fino alle esperienze didattiche. Da essi emerge un quadro differenziato e molto articolato della ricerca e della prassi urbanistica negli anni recenti. Today, urban scholars think of cities and regions as evolving through networks of human associations, technologies, and natural ecologies. This being the case, planners are faced with the task of navigating a profoundly material world. Planning with and for humans alone is unacceptable: in the unfolding of urban processes, non-human things cannot be ignored. This inclusive vision has consequences for how planners envision the connections among norms, technologies and life-worlds as well as how they design and implement their plans. The contributors to this volume utilize a variety of examples – ecologically-sensitive, regional planning in Naples (Italy); congestion pricing in New York City; and public participation in Europe, among others – to explore how planners engage a heterogeneous and restless world. Inspired by assemblage thinking and actor-network theory, each chapter draws on this "new materialism" to acknowledge, in quite pragmatic ways, that spatial politics is a process of becoming that is inseparable from the materiality of urban practices.
