Il volume raccoglie un'ampia rassegna di scritti, in maggior parte inediti, in onore di Giuseppe Dato, professore ordinario di Tecnica e Pianificazione Urbanistica e Preside della facoltà di Architettura dell'Università degli Studi di Catania, con sede a Siracusa. Gli autori sono docenti e ricercatori italiani e stranieri, oltre ad alcuni allievi oggi impegnati nella pratica professionale, che hanno intrattenuto con Giuseppe Dato rapporti di collaborazione scientifica, didattica, professionale o di amicizia. I testi proposti abbracciano un'ampia gamma di temi: dalla pianificazione di area vasta agli studi sul paesaggio, dalla progettazione urbana alla storia della città e del territorio, fino alle esperienze didattiche. Da essi emerge un quadro differenziato e molto articolato della ricerca e della prassi urbanistica negli anni recenti. Gli argomenti trattati sono riferiti a diversi Paesi che si affacciano sul bacino del Mediterraneo, sia sulla sponda europea che su quella nordafricana e asiatica, con una incursione nell'America Latina. Attraverso il filo conduttore delle relazioni personali degli autori con un docente e studioso che ha operato per un quarantennio nel Mezzogiorno, i testi proposti contribuiscono alla messa a fuoco delle recenti tendenze che emergono nelle discipline che si occupano della città e del territorio. Assieme alle esperienze didattiche e della diffusione della conoscenza del territorio i temi trattati spaziano dalle diverse declinazioni del concetto di sostenibilità, alla lettura delle principali trasformazioni urbane, alla mobilità nei suoi diversi aspetti, al ruolo dei servizi e delle infrastrutture tecnologiche nei sistemi urbani, alla tutela del paesaggio e del patrimonio culturale, alla partecipazione nella costruzione del piano. I punti di osservazione proposti rivelano alcune delle complessità e delle contraddizioni dei fenomeni territoriali che emergono in un orizzonte territoriale come quello che gravita attorno al bacino del Mediterraneo, dove passato e presente animano uno scenario ricco e vitale. Ha curato questa raccolta di scritti in onore del suo Maestro, FrancescoMartinico, professore associato di Tecnica e Pianificazione Urbanistica, con la collaborazione dei colleghi del Dipartimento di Architettura dell'Università degli Studi di Catania, presso il quale Giuseppe Dato ha svolto gran parte della sua attività scientifica.

Time has become an increasingly important topic in urban studies and urban planning. The spatial-temporal interplay is not only of relevance for the theory of urban development and urban politics, but also for urban planning and governance. The space-time approach focuses on the human being with its various habits and routines in the city. Italy and the UK experienced a radical re-organisation of urban space following the devastation of many towns and cities in the Second World War. The need to rebuild led to an intellectual and cultural exchange between a wave of talented architects, urbanists and architectural historians in the two countries. Post-war Architecture Between Italy and the UK studies this exchange, exploring how the connections and mutual influences contributed to the formation of a distinctive stance towards Internationalism, notwithstanding the countries’ contrasting geographic and climatic conditions, levels of economic and industrial development, and social structures. N. 54 della collana Città, territorio, piano diretta da Giuseppe Imbesi Per chi è nato a Roma nel primo dopoguerra il Ghetto riassume nei suoi slarghi e nei suoi vicoli un periodo doloroso della storia di questa città, quello che va dal luglio 1943 al giugno 1944. Un omaggio ad uno dei principali protagonisti di quei tragici eventi, Mimma Spizzichino, con la testimonianza di un rapporto, che seppur breve ed episodico, conserva memoria d’una persona eccezionale. La proposta di un itinerario per scoprire, andando a piedi tra le strade del Ghetto, l’intreccio fra l’aspetto attuale e quello che ha avuto in passato quando recintato da un muro era il luogo in cui la “comunità ebraica romana” doveva risiedervi obbligatoriamente. I muri dei vecchi palazzi documentano ancor oggi la storia d’una convivenza tra due comunità di religione diversa. L’autore è nato a Roma nel primo dopoguerra (luglio del 1947) ed è sempre qui vissuto. A Roma ha svolto tutta la sua carriera scolastica fino alla laurea in Ingegneria. A Roma ha lavorato in una importante società d’informatica per trentacinque anni. A Roma ha condotto le sue battaglie civili per la crescita sociale e democratica del Paese. Come tutti i romani autentici ha avuto ed ha un intenso rapporto emotivo con la sua città e la sua storia. Le sue radici lo hanno portato ad approfondire la conoscenza, sin da quando frequentava il liceo, dell’eccezionale contesto storico-ambientale in cui si muoveva ogni giorno. In particolare la sua attenzione e le sue letture si sono soffermate sui luoghi e sugli avvenimenti accaduti a Roma fra il bombardamento di San Lorenzo (Luglio 1943) e la liberazione della città da parte degli alleati (Giugno 1944) di cui tanto aveva sentito parlare da bambino in famiglia.

Questo libro raccoglie gli atti del secondo Convegno nazionale dei dottorati italiani dell’architettura, della pianificazione e del design La ricerca che cambia, svoltosi il 1° e il 2 dicembre 2016 presso la Scuola di dottorato dell’Università Iuav di Venezia. L'obiettivo che si pone è duplice: da una parte lasciare una traccia, sia pur sintetica, di quanto è stato esposto e dibattuto nelle sessioni plenarie del convegno e nei workshop dei coordinatori, dall’altra dare ampio spazio alle questioni affrontate dalle tesi di dottorato selezionate attraverso un processo di selezione anonima e presentate in tavoli di discussione paralleli. Sono otto i temi che, in maniera trasversale alle diverse discipline, costituiscono i fuochi di interesse intorno a cui si articolano i vari capitoli di questo e-book: cambiamenti, luoghi, modelli, narrazioni, riusi, spazi, storie, strutture. I saggi affrontano questioni che attengono a tali temi secondo gli specifici punti di vista dei molti settori disciplinari che spaziano dall'ICAR/10 all'ICAR/21. Per quanto distanti possano sembrare specializzazioni e competenze di questi settori, essi hanno le stesse radici e sono sicuramente ancora dialoganti. Il volume ha il fine strategico di contribuire a rilanciare, attualizzandola, la cultura del progetto di architettura e il suo ruolo nei processi di avanzamento sociale. Nella prima parte del testo, si restituisce un confronto tra quanti agiscono all'interno o attorno al DASTEC (Dipartimento di Arte, Scienza e Tecnica del Costruire), con riflessioni sul “mestiere dell'architetto”, tenendo conto delle nuove complessità interne ed esterne alla sfera del progetto, offrendo la propria interpretazione delle declaratorie scientifiche più recenti, delle sfide tematiche più attuali e significative, delle nuove tendenze e delle opportunità deducibili dalla recente legislazione universitaria in materia di formazione, oltre che di ricerca di base e di servizio per il territorio. La seconda parte del testo raccoglie, invece, gli eventi culturali promossi dal DASTEC dal 2005 al 2011, con un obiettivo in parte filologico, volendo ribadire, attraverso la testimonianza di esperienze concrete e realizzate con ampia partecipazione interna ed esterna, i due principi generali che in questi anni hanno orientato il cammino del Dipartimento: pensare al progetto come luogo centrale dell'architettura, esercitarlo, nella pratica e nella formazione, con approcci e metodi scientifici.
