Jan Smulders groeit op in het katholieke Brabant van een eeuw geleden, waar dansen verdacht is en de veerpont bij Moerdijk nog toe kan met één afvaart per uur. Werkloos in de crisistijd onderneemt hij een fietstocht via Hitler-Duitsland naar Zwitserland. Terug in Nederland ontmoet Jan in Bergen op Zoom de liefde van zijn leven, maar geld om te trouwen heeft hij niet. Zijn Duitse vriend wordt gemobiliseerd in Hitlers leger, terwijl Jan zelf als sergeant de Duitse inval meemaakt. Tijdens de bezetting herbergen zijn ouders een onderduiker, blijkt zijn broer een 'foute' dichter en kan hij - als zo veel Nederlanders - moeilijk zijn eigen houding bepalen.
