Quatro meninos, amigos inseparáveis, que estudam na mesma sala do sexto ano numa escola pública e gostam de ler livros, descobrem que existe uma nova biblioteca no bairro nos fundos de um cemitério. Luís, Mário, Osmar e Paulo resolvem visitá-la e lá conhecem Aline, a jovem e encantadora bibliotecária. Ficam felizes ao descobrirem que ela não é uma alma penada. Os meninos, então, além de conhecerem as novas histórias nos livros que emprestam da biblioteca, começam a conhecer também as histórias dos mortos enterrados no cemitério e de seus parentes que sofrem com as perdas. Aline é uma bibliotecária voluntária, ativista da literatura, sempre inventando alguma coisa para atrair ou alcançar as pessoas do bairro e aproximá-las dos livros. O leitor vai descobrir o que se pode inventar e fazer com os livros e como eles podem transformar rotinas, proporcionar descobertas, inspirar sonhos e ideais, juntar e aproximar pessoas. Aline e o seu namorado Ayo estão estudando para entrar na USP. Ele é slammer, poeta que disputa competições poéticas. Os dois, com a colaboração dos meninos e amigos, preparam a Festa do Dia dos Mortos, inspirada na tradição mexicana. Já nos primeiros capítulos, o leitor se sentirá à vontade e curioso para acompanhar as aventuras dos personagens nessa biblioteca cativante, entre túmulos, cruzes e livros, e saborear o café com bolo de laranja preparados por Aline, se encantar com a desarrumação dos livros, encontrar Zé Penado, cruzar com o fantasma Jorge, conhecer as meninas Íris e Dalji, a anciã indígena Tamikuã, a Sra. Valéria, a Dona Bintu e sua Praça Adotada, o cachorro Junto, entre outros, e assim se descobrir dentro de uma história insólita, e, de repente, se ver deitado à meia-noite no gramado, sob um céu estrelado derramando estrelas cadentes, num lugar especial, que está dentro de uma cratera provocada por um meteorito que caiu na região há milhões de anos, com aldeias indígenas guaranis e a mata atlântica ao redor. Meia-noite na biblioteca é o registro ficcional de uma biblioteca que existiu por mais de dez anos dentro de um cemitério, que ao encontrar abrigo na casa do ex-coveiro, transformou-se também numa história pulsante e arrebatadora que não para de ser contada mundo afora. Esta primeira temporada de Meia-noite na biblioteca acontece entre outubro de 2019 e março de 2020, quando então a pandemia da Covid-19 surpreendeu o mundo e a biblioteca precisou fechar suas portas pela primeira vez.

Em Meia-noite na biblioteca – Temporada 2, a paisagem ficou vazia de pessoas: ruas, praças, escolas, campinho de futebol, igrejas, comércio, enfim, o bairro inteiro. Ela encontra uma passagem pelo muro do cemitério e, às escondidas, faz visitas à biblioteca para pegar livros e com ajuda de Ayo, o namorado, e Dedê, parceiro na biblioteca, vai distribuindo-os pelo bairro. Seguindo os protocolos sanitários de prevenção contra o vírus, eles organizam ações sociais para enfrentar e minimizar os impactos da quarentena na vida de famílias vulneráveis, que se veem, repentinamente, sem emprego e em dificuldades financeiras. Aline circula pelo bairro carregando uma caixa de livros em sua bicicleta. A biblioteca comunitária agora vai ao encontro de seus leitores. Os quatro meninos, cada um confinado em sua casa, sofrem com a biblioteca fechada, mas descobrem outras formas de convívio e encontros. Osmar conhece várias palavras novas que a pandemia revela. Luís vê um verbo se espalhar pelo bairro. Mário começa a escrever redações sobre o que está vivendo e, assim, dá um abraço diferente no amigo Paulo. Aline passa a maior parte do tempo em casa, com a avó Bintu, que vive debruçada na janela do seu quarto e observa o lado bom de o mundo ser obrigado a parar, pois polui menos. As árvores e plantas da Praça Adotada nunca foram tão vistosas. Aline é surpreendida ao receber a carta de despejo da biblioteca da casa do ex-coveiro, porque o cemitério precisa ampliar os seus serviços durante a pandemia. Meia-noite na biblioteca – Temporada 2 é também um registro ficcional da nova fase enfrentada pela Biblioteca Comunitária Caminhos da Leitura, em Parelheiros, durante a pandemia, que se vê perdendo o seu espaço no cemitério e, ao mesmo tempo, criando e organizando ações sociais e literárias pelo bairro. Novamente, o leitor irá descobrir o que se pode fazer com os livros e a literatura ao enfrentar uma rotina necessária no mundo todo, que isola as pessoas, pois qualquer tipo de aglomeração e encontro é perigoso.
