Mehrfache Reisen oder Pilgerfahrten nach Südindien führten Wolfgang Herbert, den „verspäteten Hippie“, mit Vorliebe an den Fuß des Arunachala, eines heiligen Berges in Tamil Nadu, wo der wohl paradigmatischste Weisheitslehrer des modernen Indien, Ramana Maharishi, gewirkt hatte. Berichtet wird über historische, mentale und leibliche Begegnungen mit Botschaftern des geistigen Indien – stets balancierend zwischen Skepsis und Offenheit. Allerorten wird dabei ausgelotet, wie weit eine – unter den Vorzeichen der Globalisierung – echte Begegnung zwischen Ost und West möglich sein mag. Das Buch ist eine Collage aus Reisejournalen, Reflexionen über orientalische Philosopheme und deren Ertrag qua meditativer Exerzitien. Es erlaubt eine kaprizenhafte Lektüre, querfeldein und nach thematischem Gusto. Indien darf auch als Chiffre für die Suche nach dem wahren Selbst stehen, einer romantischen Sehnsucht nach – wie seit altersher kolportiert – dem Land der Weisen und Seher. Dabei begegnet der Autor einer genauso schockierenden wie befreienden Weltsicht: einer radikal non-dualen Ontologie. Entwickelt in den philosophischen Endnoten zu den heiligen Schriften der Hindus, den Veden, meisterlich entfaltet von Shankara als Advaita-Vedânta, der Lehre der „Nicht-Zweiheit“ und gegenpolig elaboriert in den metaphysischen Spekulationen der mahâyâna-buddhistischen Weisheitsliteratur. Dabei geht es um authentische Mystik – und die gipfelt immer in All-Einheitslehren: im Abendland eher verfemt, aber unterströmig tradiert und weitergeflüstert von Plotin über Eckhart bis Spinoza und Ken Wilber. Sie werden zu Verbündeten im Ringen um eine Synthese oder einer Versöhnung zwischen „okzidentalem“ und „asiatischem“ Denken. Die Exkursionen sind dabei auch stets experimenteller Natur – sie führen ins Labor des eigenen Geistes. Der Autor hat sich viele Jahre mit yogischen und zen-buddhistischen Meditationsweisen befasst und versucht diese auf einer spirituellen Landkarte zu verorten. Dr. Wolfgang Herbert stammt aus Westösterreich und lebt als Professor für Vergleichende Kulturwissenschaften (Universität Tokushima) seit Ende der 1980er Jahren in Japan.
