يُعدّ بيتر ڤايس Peter Weiss (1916 - 1982) واحداً من أهم كتّاب اللغة الألمانية في النصف الثاني من القن العشرين. وفي العقد السادس كان أشهر كاتب مسرحي يكتب باللغة الألمانية. أهم مسرحياته "مارا / ساد"، "تروتسكي في المنفى"، "هولدرلين". لدى فايس ينتظم هولدرلين ومارا وتروتسكي في صف "الشهداء الثوريين" الذين يكرسون حياتهم من أجل تغيير الظروف تغييراً جذرياً، لكن الواقع يضيّق عليهم الخناق ويدفعهم إلى حافة الهلاك أو إلى الهلاك الفعلي. طوال السبعينيات، عمل بيتر فايس على رواية "جمالية المقاومة"، التي صدرت في ثلاثة أجزاء بين عامي 1975 و1981، يعرض فيها التاريخ السياسي لهذا القرن، وخاصة تاريخ الحركة الثورية في أوروبا، بل يصور مجمل تاريخ البشرية. كما هي من أجمل ما كتب عن الأعمال الفنية على الإطلاق، ويحلل فايس فيها عدداً من روائع الآثار الأدبية والفنية في القرن العشرين تحليلاً سياسياً طبقياً لا نظير له. من أهم هذه الآثار رواية "القلعة" لكافكا ولوحة "غيرنيكا" لبيكاسو. في مسرحية "القضية" يقدم فايس تفسيراً جديداً لرواية كافكا غير مألوف. فهو يرى أن القوى التي تشد ك. إلى أسفل وفي النهاية تقضي عليه هي، على وجه الإجمال، قوى البورجوازية الصغيرة. وهو لا يتمرد على هذه القوى، بل يرضخ لها حتى درجة إلغاء الذات. إن القوى الغامضة التي يقع تحت رحمتها هي، قوى اجتماعية تحافظ، بالابتزاز والتهديد، على نظام اجتماعي قديم. إن ممثلي هذا المجتمع يظهرون في كامل وضاعتهم وكذبهم. يرى ك. كل شيء بوضوح. لكنه يظل سجين طبقته. إنه يمر بين بيوت الفقراء والعمال. إنه في أعينهم، باعتباره ممثلاً للبنك، عدو. لكن القضية الأخرى التي يجرى هنا التمهيد لها ضده والتي كان يمكنها أن تقربه من الحقيقة، تظل غير مفهومة بالنسبة له. إنه يتمسك بموقفه بين مرايا نظامه المشوهة، هذا النظام الذي يعتبره غير قابل للتغيير. بسبب ضعفه هذا يتحطم ك.
