Eheliche Verbindungen, Liebesbeziehungen und erotische Verhältnisse zwischen Juden und Christen finden sich in der deutschsprachigen Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts in ganz unterschiedlichen Formen: Von der Faszination und erotischen Verführungskraft des exotischen Fremden bis hin zur verzweifelten, in den Selbstmord treibenden vergeblichen Liebe, von der kalkulierten Vernunftehe aus ökonomischen Gründen bis hin zum radikalen Bruch mit dem Herkunftsmilieu durch Flucht des Liebespaars. Auf der Grundlage von über 80 Prosatexten und außerliterarischen Diskursen analysiert Eva Lezzi die im 19. Jahrhundert vorherrschenden Konzepte von Liebe und Ehe, Geschlecht und Religion, aber auch Fremdem und Eigenem. Dabei berücksichtigt sie nicht nur hochkanonische Texte (Goethe, Raabe, Fontane) und weitverbreitete Unterhaltungsliteratur von jüdischen wie nichtjüdischen Autorinnen und Autoren, sondern entdeckt auch kaum bekannte Publikationen. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit widmet sie den historischen Kontroversen um die Emanzipation des Individuums, der Juden und der Frau. Dabei setzt sich die Autorin mit Foucault und Luhmann auseinander und verbindet eine grundlegende Diskursanalyse mit sorgfältigem close reading.
