Fast seine gesamte Wittenberger Tätigkeit hindurch hielt Melanchthon sonntags Vorlesungen insbesondere für ausländische Studenten, die dem deutschen Gottesdienst nicht folgen konnten. Bei seinen Erklärungen des Bibeltextes schöpfte er aus der Fülle seines theologischen, historischen, naturkundlichen etc. Wissens. Drei dieser Sonntagsvorlesungen werden exemplarisch übersetzt und kommentiert. In seine Vorlesungen streute Melanchthon viele Anekdoten aus Antike und Literatur und aus Begegnungen etwa mit Dürer, Luther, Kurfürst Friedrich d. Weisen ein. Sie wurden von Studenten aufgeschrieben und sind meist nur handschriftlich überliefert. Diese Anekdoten und Geschichten, als "Dicta Melanthonis" bezeichnet, werden hier erstmals in Übersetzung samt Kommentar vorgestellt. Sie zeigen eine fast völlig unbekannte Seite Melanchthons: den großen Geschichtenerzähler. [Sunday lectures and anecdotes] During almost all of his time in Wittenberg, Melanchthon gave lectures on Sundays, especially for foreign students who could not understand the German service. For his explanations of the Bible text he drew from his profound theological, historical and biological knowledge. By way of example, the volume contains translations of three of these Sunday lectures, including comments. Melanchthon sprinkled his lectures with various anecdotes from the ancient world, from literature and from encounters with Dürer, Luther, and Elector Frederick the Wise. They were written down by students and have mostly only been handed down in handwriting. These anecdotes and stories, known as "Dicta Melanthonis", are presented here for the first time in translation and with commentary. They show an almost completely unknown side of Melanchthon: the one of a great storyteller.

Bainton Book Prize of the Sixteenth Century Society and Conference During the sixteenth century, no part of the Christian West saw the development of a more powerful and pervasive astrological culture than the very home of the Reformation movement--the Protestant towns of the Holy Roman Empire. While most modern approaches to the religious and social reforms of that age give scant attention to cosmological preoccupations, Robin Barnes argues that astrological concepts and imagery played a key role in preparing the ground for the evangelical movement sparked by Martin Luther in the 1520s, as well as in shaping the distinctive characteristics of German evangelical culture over the following century. Spreading above all through cheap printed almanacs and prognostications, popular astrology functioned in paradoxical ways. It contributed to an enlarged and abstracted sense of the divine that led away from clericalism, sacramentalism, and the cult of the saints; at the same time, it sought to ground people more squarely in practical matters of daily life. The art gained unprecedented sanction from Luther's closest associate, Philipp Melanchthon, whose teachings influenced generations of preachers, physicians, schoolmasters, and literate layfolk. But the apocalyptic astrology that came to prevail among evangelicals involved a perpetuation, even a strengthening, of ties between faith and cosmology, which played out in beliefs about nature and natural signs that would later appear as rank superstitions. Not until the early seventeenth century did Luther's heirs experience a "crisis of piety" that forced preachers and stargazers to part ways. Astrology and Reformation illuminates an early modern outlook that was both practical and prophetic; a world that was neither traditionally enchanted nor rationally disenchanted, but quite different from the medieval world of perception it had displaced.

First published in 1968. It can hardly be denied that the men who have most changed history have been the great religious leaders. Among the great prophets, and, with the possible exception of Calvin, the last of world-wide importance, Martin Luther has taken his place. His career marks the beginning of the present epoch, for it is safe to say that every man in western Europe and in America is leading a different life to-day from what he would have led and is another person altogether from what he would have been, had Martin Luther not lived. Granting, as axiomatic, that essential factors of the movement are to be found in the social, political, and cultural conditions of the age, and in the work of predecessors and followers, in short, in the environment which alone made Luther's lifework possible, there must still remain a very large element due directly and solely to his personality. The present work aims to explain that personality; to show him in the setting of his age; to indicate what part of his work is to be attributed to his inheritance and to the events of the time, but especially to reveal that part of the man which seems, at least, to be explicable by neither heredity nor environment, and to be more important than either, the character, or individuality.

Die Jahre 1550–1552 waren aus heutiger Sicht Schicksalsjahre der Reformation. Wenige Jahre nach dem Tod Luthers und der Niederlage der Protestanten im Schmalkaldischen Krieg war Kaiser Karl V. gewillt, die religionspolitischen Streitigkeiten auf der Fortsetzung des Trienter Konzils endgültig beizulegen. Philipp Melanchthon wurde als religionspolitischer Berater des Kurfürsten Moritz von Sachsen mit den Vorbereitungen auf eine Teilnahme betraut. Dafür verfasste Melanchthon nicht nur mit der Confessio Saxonica eine neue Bekenntnisschrift, sondern bemühte sich auch um eine abgestimmte evangelische Konzilsvorbereitung. Dass es schließlich nicht zu diesem Besuch kam, ist Moritz von Sachsen zuzuschreiben, der sich für eine militärische Intervention gegen den Kaiser entschied. Auch wenn diese riskante Unternehmung erfolgreich verlief, haderte Melanchthon auch noch nach dem Abschluss des Passauer Vertrags mit diesem Vorgehen. [Melanchthon's Religious-Political Activities between the Interim and the Treaty of Passau] From today's perspective, the years 1550–1552 were crucial years for the Reformation. A few years after Luther's death and the defeat of the Protestants in the Schmalkaldic War, Emperor Charles V was willing to finally settle the religious-political disputes at the continuation of the Council of Trent. Philipp Melanchthon was entrusted with the preparations for participation as religious-political advisor to the Kurfürst Moritz of Saxony. For this purpose, Melanchthon not only wrote a new confession, the Confessio Saxonica, but also made efforts to coordinate Protestant preparations for the Council. The fact that it finally did not come to a visit is attributable to Moritz of Saxony, who decided in favor of a military intervention against the emperor. Even though this risky venture was successful, Melanchthon continued to resent this course of action even after the Treaty of Passau was concluded.

At the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the Heidelberg Catechism, an international conference on the spirituality of the Heidelberg Catechism was held at the Theological University Apeldoorn, 21-22 June 2013. This publication offers the plenary papers presented, and a selection of the short papers. While the papers center on the Catechism's spirituality, a wide range of topics is covered, from both historical and theological perspectives.
