North Melbourne is an inner-west area of Metropolitan Melbourne. Until 1 July 2008, it was shared between the Local Government Areas of Moonee Valley and Melbourne, but is now entirely within Melbourne municipality. Its proximity to the central city meant that since the 1980's the area has slowly become gentrified and shopping strips such as Errol Street (where the North Melbourne Town Hall is located) have become more popular. North Melbourne is now one of the municipality's most dynamic and complex small areas, noted for its mixture of Victorian architecture, retail, warehouses and factories. North Melbourne still retains some of its public housing and a strong migrant mix too, with low income families arriving from Somalia, Eritrea, etc.

East Melbourne is an affluent inner city area located between the CBD and the municipality's eastern edge. It is home to many of Victoria's government institutions including the Parliament House and Treasury building, as well as St Patrick's Cathedral, some of the larger medical institutions and some of the municipality's finest Victorian parks and gardens such as the Treasury Gardens and Fitzroy gardens. The area is also known for the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) situated in the locality of Jolimont, (a part of the East Melbourne small area). The historic Fitzroy, Treasury and Parliament Gardens separate East Melbourne from the Central City, providing important pedestrian links and tourist and recreational attractions. The area still has a large health services industry and as a result of its proximity to a number of hospitals many medical practitioners have rooms in East Melbourne. These hospitals include The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH), Freemasons' Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute. In addition, St Vincent's Hospital and St Vincent's & Mercy Private Hospitals are located in adjacent Fitzroy, after recently relocating from their original site in East Melbourne.

Formerly an industrial area and part of South Melbourne, Southbank was transformed into a densely populated suburb of high rise buildings beginning in the early 1990s as part of an urban renewal program. The vast majority of residents live in high rise apartments, the tallest of which is the Eureka Tower. The Eureka tower has 92 levels, reaching 300m tall making it one of the world's tallest residential buildings. The central feature of Southbank is Southgate Arts and Leisure Precinct, a retail, eating, and entertainment precinct on the southern bank of the Yarra River. Southbank is home to the arts precinct, including the Victorian Arts Centre at the eastern end, an entertainment precinct, including Crown Casino, small education sector and office precinct. In May, 2008 the Victorian Government created the new suburb place and name 'South Wharf', in the western end of Southbank (encompassing the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre and Polly Woodside National Trust museum). South Wharf has no residential population and a small economy and business sector with some employment (estimated at around 15 businesses employing 1200 workers). South Wharf is still an area predominantly under development which will eventually add another convention centre, a hotel and significant retail.

Kensington is an inner-west area of Metropolitan Melbourne. Until 1 July 2008, it was split between the Local Government Areas of Moonee Valley Melbourne, but is now fully under the administration of the City of Melbourne. Kensington was once home to one of Victoria's major abattoirs and livestock sale yards, as well as an army ordnance depot, and has a 'working-class' history. Since the 1970s, these sites have become an inner- urban redevelopment project carried out under the auspices of the State government. Kensington/Flemington retains a mix of heavy and light industry alongside a gentrifying residential area. It is also the location of one of Melbourne's 1970s public housing estates which comprised a mixture of high-rise towers and low-rise walk-up flats. The walk-up blocks have since been redeveloped into a mix of private apartments, townhouses and public housing units.
