When the Melodrama came to the United States it first had to be Americanized. So the American authors had to invent a new kind of Melodrama which had an American spirit. What they did first was to copy successful European plays and rewrite them for American conditions. By the late 19thcentury real American melodramas were written including a lot of action, violence and often the use of huge machinery. “Melodrama became a direct expression of American society and national character”1 as well as technological progress and its dangers. What I am going to do now is to deal with the intentions of the Americanized Melodrama. I think a brief definition of what a melodrama is should be enough because so many others have already taken its definition into pieces. Of more importance is the way the American society is shaped at that time and the way the Melodrama influences and criticises society. I will try to explain the function of a melodrama and how it is used as a voice of society. The example ofUnder the Gaslightby Augustin Daly will help us to understand the functions of the melodrama and how they are implemented.

The genre of mélodrame à grand spectacle that emerged in the boulevard theatres of Paris in the 1790s - and which was quickly exported abroad - expressed the moral struggle between good and evil through a drama of heightened emotions. Physical gesture, mise en scène and music were as important in communicating meaning and passion as spoken dialogue. The premise of this volume is the idea that the melodramatic aesthetic is central to our understanding of nineteenth-century music drama, broadly defined as spoken plays with music, operas and other hybrid genres that combine music with text and/or image. This relationship is examined closely, and its evolution in the twentieth century in selected operas, musicals and films is understood as an extension of this nineteenth-century aesthetic. The book therefore develops our understanding of opera in the context of melodrama's broader influence on musical culture during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This book will appeal to those interested in film studies, drama, theatre and modern languages as well as music and opera.

Accompanying I will give an account of the melodramatic components of the 19th century novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. Both, melodrama and Jane Eyre, had their biggest impetus in the 19th century, thus have specific elements in common. Although Jane Eyre is not a drama to be played on stage it still concludes several melodramatic attributes, which will be specified after analyzing the term melodrama. The term melo originates from the Greek word melos, meaning music, which together with the annex drama simply refers to a stage play accompanied with music. Jean Jacques Rousseau is said to have firstly used a method of linking words with music in Pygmalion of 1770. In early 19th century use, melodrama referred to a stage play with interspersing songs and actors supported by music. By the end of the century the term had almost exclusively narrowed down to a dramatic piece marked by sensations, appeals to the emotions and a happy ending. Nevertheless music remained and still remains a crucial element to emphasize and intensify characters and scenes presented on stage and nowadays particularly in films. This musical element can also be found in the novels primarily of the 19th century expressed in a specific literary style, Brooks describes as follows:

Originating in Japan early in the 1970s as a simple sing-along technology, karaoke has become a hybrid media form designed to integrate mass-mediated popular music, video images, computer graphics, and the live musical performance of its human users. Not only has karaoke become a multimillion-dollar entertainment industry, its varied uses have also evolved into diverse popular cultural and social practices among many people around the world. Based on a two-year ethnographic study, this book offers a penetrating analysis of how karaoke is used in the expression, maintenance, and (re)construction of social identity as part of the Chinese American experience. It also explores the theoretical implications of interaction between the media audience and karaoke as both an electronic communication technology and a cultural practice. This book analyzes the social origins of karaoke and the dramaturgical characteristics of karaoke events, and explains how various musical genres are reframed as karaoke music. It also visits the numerous karaoke scenes in their natural context -- the sites of the actual consumption of media products, such as expensive private homes and fancy hotel ballrooms in the affluent suburbs of New Jersey, working-class restaurants and nightclubs in the multiethnic neighborhoods in Flushing, Queens, and Cantonese opera music clubs in New York's Chinatown. Finally, the book offers an intimate analysis of how karaoke has been adopted by several interpretive communities of first-generation Chinese immigrants not only as popular entertainment but also as a means to help (re)define their social identity and way of life.

The mention of the term "melodrama" is likely to evoke a response from laymen and musicians alike that betrays an acquaintance only with the popular form of the genre and its greatly heightened drama, exaggerated often to the point of the ridiculous. Few are aware that there exists a type of melodrama that contains in its smaller forms the beauty of the sung ballad and, in the larger-scale works, the appeal of the spoken play. This category of melodrama is one that surfaced in many cultures but was perhaps never so enthusiastically cultivated as in the Czech lands. The melodrama varied greatly at the hands of its Czech advocates. While the works of Zdeněk Fibich and his contemporary Josef Bohuslav Foerster, a composer best known for his songs, remained closely bound to the text, those of conductor/composer Otakar Ostrčil reveal a stance that privileged the music and, given their creator’s orchestral experience, are more reminiscent of the symphonic poem. Fibich in his staged works and Josef Suk (composer/violinist and Dvořák’s son-in-law), in his incidental music reflect variously late nineteenth-century Romanticism, the influence of Wagner, and early manifestations of Impressionism. In its more recent guise, the principles of the staged melodrama reside quite comfortably in the film score. Judith A. Mabary’s important volume will be of interest not only to musicologists, but those working in Central and East European studies, voice studies, European theatre, and those studying music and nationalism.
