Fiberglass and Glass Technology: Energy-Friendly Compositions and Applications provides a detailed overview of fiber, float and container glass technology with special emphasis on energy- and environmentally-friendly compositions, applications and manufacturing practices which have recently become available and continue to emerge. Energy-friendly compositions are variants of incumbent fiberglass and glass compositions that are obtained by the reformulation of incumbent compositions to reduce the viscosity and thereby the energy demand. Environmentally-friendly compositions are variants of incumbent fiber, float and container glass compositions that are obtained by the reformulation of incumbent compositions to reduce environmentally harmful emissions from their melts. Energy- and environmentally-friendly compositions are expected to become a key factor in the future for the fiberglass and glass industries. This book consists of two complementary sections: continuous glass fiber technology and soda-lime-silica glass technology. Important topics covered include: o Commercial and experimental compositions and products o Design of energy- and environmentally-friendly compositions o Emerging glass melting technologies including plasma melting o Fiberglass composite design and engineering o Emerging fiberglass applications and markets Fiberglass and Glass Technology: Energy-Friendly Compositions and Applications is written for researchers and engineers seeking a modern understanding of glass technology and the development of future products that are more energy- and environmentally-friendly than current products.

A special chapter is dedicate to phosphate glasses, their importance, preparation methods, structure and properties. The use of different types of phosphate glasses in biomedicine, optics, electrochemistry, and as hosts for nuclear wastes is thoroughly discussed. Moreover, the applications of phosphate glasses in electronics and laser technology are also discussed in this book. Recent experimental studies such as the development of a novel bioglass system and the influence of ZnO, TiO2, and Al2O3 incorporation on structural, mechanical strength, degradation, pH variation, and formation of hydroxyapatite (Hap) layer on the glass surface are reported. Promising aluminum-silicate glassy system and its glass-ceramic counterpart are also presented in this books. An overview of the calorimetry approaches related to rare earth improvements on the thermal stability of glass is provided. The book discusses the advances in the chalcogenide glasses (ChGs) and based devices. It also reports their applications in optical devices, semiconductor circuits, and other applications. In addition, lanthanide and/or QDs doped luminescent glasses and their use in solid-state lighting and displays, security (anti-counterfeiting), optical temperature sensors, and solar energy (solar spectrum conversion) are reviewed along with a comparison of their advantages and disadvantages. Finally, the nature of phthalocyanines as materials for glass coatings and most widely used synthesis methods of porphyrins and phthalocyanines are discussed.

Solidification And Crystallization Processing In Metals And Alloys written by Hasse Fredriksson and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-07-02 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Solidification and Crystallization Processing in Metals and Alloys Hasse Fredriksson KTH, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden Ulla Åkerlind University of Stockholm, Sweden Solidification or crystallization occurs when atoms are transformed from the disordered liquid state to the more ordered solid state, and is fundamental to metals processing. Conceived as a companion volume to the earlier works, Materials Processing during Casting (2006) and Physics of Functional Materials (2008), this book analyzes solidification and crystallization processes in depth. Starting from the thermodynamic point of view, it gives a complete description, taking into account kinetics and mass transfer, down to the final structure. Importantly, the book shows the relationship between the theory and the experimental results. Topics covered include: Fundamentals of thermodynamics Properties of interfaces Nucleation Crystal growth - in vapours, liquids and melts Heat transport during solidification processes Solidification structures - faceted, dendritic, eutectic and peritectic Metallic glasses and amorphous alloy melts Solidification and Crystallization Processing in Metals and Alloys features many solved examples in the text, and exercises (with answers) for students. Intended for Masters and PhD students as well as researchers in Materials Science, Engineering, Chemistry and Metallurgy, it is also a valuable resource for engineers in industry.

Glasses Glass Ceramics And Ceramics For Immobilization Of Highly Radioactive Nuclear Wastes written by D. Caurant and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Ceramic materials categories.

The reprocessing of nuclear spent fuel generates highly radioactive liquid wastes (HLW) that must be isolated from the biosphere in very durable solid matrices. In the first part of this book, generalities are presented on the radionuclides occurring in HLW and on the main characteristics and preparation methods of waste forms (glasses, ceramics, glass-ceramics) for the immobilisation of separated or non-separated wastes. In the second part, the characteristics of two categories of long-lived radionuclides (135Cs and minor actinides Np, Am, Cm) and the main matrices proposed for their specific immobilisation are reviewed. Results are presented on ceramic and glass-ceramic matrices developed for the conditioning of Cs (hollandite) and minor actinides (zirconolite, zirconolite-based glass-ceramic) and studied in the authors' laboratory.

Properties Of Glass Forming Melts written by David Pye and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-05-12 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book presents state-of-the-art information concerning properties and processes involved in glass melts. Based upon contributions by renowned authors and scientists working with glass melt systems, Properties of Glass-Forming Melts is an excellent compilation of the current knowledge on property data, mechanisms, measurement techniques, and structure-related properties of glass-forming. The authors provide in-depth analyses of such topics as glass-melt density, thermal expansion, heat conductivity, and chemical activities. Each chapter combines fundamental concepts with a compilation of recent and reliable data that is essential in the modeling of glass melting, fining, conditioning, and forming. The book first discusses the glass-forming melts, thermodynamics, transport properties, and redox effects of glass. This provides a sound basis to the analysis of important properties of glass melts such as viscosity, surface tension, density, and heat capacity as well as more generalized subjects of heat transfer and gas solubility. A chapter on electrical properties provides a solid foundation for understanding glass melting via direct Joule heating of the melt. The examination of the corrosive nature of molten glasses will be of great interest to tank designers and operators. This unique handbook concludes with an overview of nuclear waste vitrification, a growing discipline that relies on current data and encourages research in glass melts. This book is an ideal starting place for future-generation glass scientists and an effective reference for scientists who require data on the behavior of viscous melts and for glass technologists who apply mathematical models simulating the melting and forming processes. Properties of Glass-Forming Melts offers a one-of-a-kind and valuable source of reliable data and insight by those with firsthand knowledge and experiences in this field.
