Impulsem do napisania tej książki było nieco zaskakujące odkrycie, wynikłe z bibliograficznej kwerendy. O ile literaturoznawstwo światowe (amerykańskie, zachodnioeuropejskie, australijskie, a nawet dalekowschodnie) owocuje już od lat dwudziestych ubiegłego wieku książkami poświęconymi twórczości i biografii Hermana Melville’a – dziewiętnastowiecznego twórcy o elementarnym dla kultury Zachodu znaczeniu – w Polsce nie powstało do tej pory poważniejsze opracowanie na jego temat. Mimo że kilka dzieł autora Moby Dicka znanych jest w naszym kraju od ponad stu lat, nie powstała jeszcze melvillistyczna monografia podejmująca fenomen jego twórczości, nie ukazała się poważna biografia pisarza, nie powstał nawet projekt dokonania przekładów wszystkich jego dzieł. Wyjaśnienie czy komentowanie takiego stanu rzeczy – choć z pewnością byłoby zadaniem interesującym – nie jest jednak moim celem. Pisząc tę pracę, żywiłem nadzieję, że zaproponowany tu ogląd może dostarczyć inspiracji badawczych – i w ten sposób przyczynić się do uzupełnienia wyraźnej luki w rodzimej bibliografii naukowej. Niniejsze Prolegomena z założenia pełnią więc wobec nauki rolę służebną. Książka ta bowiem, ilustrując mój własny pogląd na twórczość Hermana Melville’a, zbiera i przedstawia informacje zaczerpnięte z badań wielu innych melvillistów – literaturoznawców, biografów, historyków, których prace albo nie są w Polsce znane, albo znane są jedynie wąskiej grupie filologów-amerykanistów. Jednak, poza nielicznymi wyjątkami, nawet oni (jak można wnioskować na podstawie stanu polskich studiów melvillistycznych) rzadko umieszczają twórczość pisarza w centrum swoich zainteresowań. Choć dziś dostępność literatury jest zupełnie inna niż jeszcze kilkanaście lat temu, zasada błędnego koła wydaje się pozostawać w mocy: zauważalny cały czas brak przekładów opracowań melvillistycznych i skąpy zasób tekstów z tej dziedziny w Polsce wynika z niedostatecznie rozbudzonego zainteresowania pisarzem, to zaś może być skutkiem braku przekładów większości dzieł Melville’a i ograniczonej liczby polskojęzycznych tekstów oferujących informacje na jego temat. Uzupełnianie polskich studiów nad literaturą powszechną o studia poświęcone Hermanowi Melville’owi zdaje się więc uzasadnione: niniejsza książka może stymulować zainteresowanie pisarzem, wpisując się w ten sposób w kontekst innych działań zorientowanych na ten sam cel. Wśród nich należy wymienić: organizację konferencji melvillistycznych i przeglądów filmów opartych na biografii Melville’a lub jego powieściach, tworzenie tematycznych stron internetowych oraz budowanie łatwo dostępnych źródeł wiedzy na jego temat. Tworzyć je można poprzez publikowanie polskojęzycznych prac poświęconych pisarzowi oraz przekładów opracowań autorstwa specjalistów spoza Polski, a także rozwijanie programów poświęconych Melville’owi monograficznych kursów akademickich. Przedstawione tu opracowanie, syntetyzujące wyniki badań nad życiem i twórczością Melville’a, wychodzi naprzeciw zapotrzebowaniu na rzetelną informację. Prolegomena niniejsze nie zastępują jednak innych prac, lecz – zgodnie z tytułem – oferują czytelnikowi wygodny punkt wyjścia dla dalszych, dogłębniejszych poszukiwań i ułatwiają poruszanie się w przestrzeni istniejących już podejść i kierunków w tej dziedzinie. Potencjalnymi adresatami niniejszej książki są więc literaturoznawcy – niekoniecznie amerykaniści - zainteresowani twórczością Melville’a, którym przydać się może rzetelne, a nie wymagającego dodatkowych nakładów czasu i energii „wprowadzenie do melvillistyki”. Skorzystać z niego mogą także studenci filologii i kulturoznawstwa (szczególnie magistranci i dyplomanci), wykładowcy historii literatury amerykańskiej XIX wieku poszukujący materiałów do zajęć – oraz nie związani z uczelniami fascynaci pisarza. Takie założenia zdecydowały o podziale treści książki i sposobie ich przedstawienia.

The volume came about as a result of a joint effort at a bifocal reflection of the international community of Melvillians and Conradians in Szczecin, Poland, in August 2007. What became clear in formal and informal discussion among the participants of that international gam was that Herman Melville and Joseph Conrad Korzeniowski shared the intuition that the essential liquidity of the existential human condition necessitates a “universal squeeze of the hand.” This idea, beautifully conceptualized by Melville in chapter 94 of Moby-Dick, caused both writers to examine in their complex narratives the ways in which various kinds of oppression prevent this desired possibility (read more in the Introduction).

The present book explores a variety of fundamental questions that all of us secretly share. Its twenty-one chapters, written by some of the world’s leading Melville and Conrad scholars, indicate possible directions of comparativist insight into the continuity and transformations of western existentialist thought between the 19th and 20th centuries. The existential philosophy of participation—so mistrustful of analytical categories—is epitomized by the lives and oeuvres of Melville and Conrad. Born in the immediacy of experience, this philosophy finds its expression in uncertain tropes and faith-based actions; rather than muffle the horror vacui with words, it plunges head first into liminality, where logos dissolves into a “positive nothing.” Unlike analytical philosophers, both Melville and Conrad refrain from talking about reality: they expose those who would listen to a first-hand experience of participation in an interpretive act. Employing literary tropes to denude the essence of the human condition, they allow their readers to transgress the limitations of language. Mistrustful of language, they accept the necessity of discourse which, to make sense, must be actively reshaped, endlessly questioned, and constantly revised. And if uncertainty is the only certainty available to us, our lowly human condition also necessitates compassion: an existential cure against the liquid, capricious reality we are afforded.
