"La primera versión de este libro --del cual se puede deducir, a partir de algunas alusiones hechas por el autor, que fue redactado entre los años 1855 y 1861, o sea después de finalizada la guerra de Crimea, y antes de la abolición de la esclavitud-- apareció en Kazan, alrededor de 1870. En 1881, también en Kazan, se publica una nueva edición, corregida, que a su vez sería reeditada en 1884. De acuerdo al prefacio de la edición de 1881, la obra habría sido copiada por el Padre Paesio, abad del monasterio de San Miguel de Theremissen, de un manuscrito que se hallaba en posesión de un monje del monte Athos. Algunos, sin embargo, afirman que el manuscrito no pertenecía al monje de Athos sino a una religiosa, cuya dirección espiritual ejercía el célebre staretz Ambrosio de Optina (entre sus papeles, llamativamente, fueron encontrados posteriormente los manuscritos de la segunda parte de las "Memorias"). Esta pequeña obra nos habla de la transformación que la práctica metódica de la "oración de Jesús" produce en un humilde campesino ruso. Este proceso de transformación comienza a partir del momento en que nuestro hombre, estando en la iglesia, escucha la exhortación apostólica: "¡Orad sin cesar!" Esta invitación, este llamado, este mandato, se aloja en su corazón y lo impulsa a buscar, entre todos los hombres, a uno que pueda orientarlo en su anhelo por obedecer ese mandato. Es así como, después de encontrar algunas respuestas, apropiadas para la razón, pero no para su corazón, da finalmente con un "maestro experimentado", con su staretz, quien con muy pocas palabras, con muy claras, muy breves y oportunas instrucciones, lo pone sobre el camino que habrá de conducirlo a desenvolver aquello que potencialmente estaba en su "corazón conciente". -- Solapas de la cubierta.
