This volume offers a thorough introduction to Jewish world literatures in Spanish and Portuguese, which not only addresses the coexistence of cultures, but also the functions of a literary and linguistic space of negotiation in this context. From the Middle Ages to present day, the compendium explores the main Jewish chapters within Spanish- and Portuguese-language world literature, whether from Europe, Latin America, or other parts of the world. No comprehensive survey of this area has been undertaken so far. Yet only a broad focus of this kind can show how diasporic Jewish literatures have been (and are ) – while closely tied to their own traditions – deeply intertwined with local and global literary developments; and how the aesthetic praxis they introduced played a decisive, formative role in the history of literature. Mas há uma outra parte, que precisa gritar ao mundo: valeu a pena! Sou o primeiro dos oito filhos de Paula Almeida de Jesus, uma grande heroína da sobrevivência. A vida desta mulher é uma novela de lutas, da qual, como personagem real nessa sofrida trama, muito me orgulho. Paula conheceu cedo, juntamente com meu pai, João Alexandre de Jesus, as agruras da seca, do trabalho rural e da miséria no interior da Bahia. Mas ela não desistia, sobretudo quando os filhos estavam em jogo. O casal saiu de Amargosa para tentar melhores condições de vida em Jequié. A vida nunca foi fácil para a nossa família. Mas a matriarca não tem tempo para se lamentar. Apesar dos problemas de saúde, que a deixaram paralítica, apesar da doença do marido, que ficou impedido de trabalhar e ajudar no sustento da família, apesar da miséria total, Paula sobrevivia com uma extraordinária gana de viver, motivada pelos filhos. Depois de conseguir a transferência do marido para tratamento de saúde em São Paulo, ela permanece em Jequié com quatro filhos. Viveu por um bom tempo da caridade dos vizinhos e das doações de amigos da igreja, sofrendo as limitações da paralisia que atingiu suas pernas. Mas a vontade de viver era tanta que, após passar anos se arrastando pelo chão ou imobilizada numa cadeira de rodas, começa a melhorar e já caminha de muletas. Os meninos não haveriam de morrer de fome, esta era a preocupação maior. Por eles, obriga-se a sair pela cidade pedindo esmolas, a correr atrás de doação de cestas básicas em entidades religiosas, a pedir sem pudor nem vergonha. Em suas extenuantes andanças, surge a oportunidade de dias melhores: morar numa fazenda, bem afastada da cidade, que pertencia a uma senhora que dela se apiedou. Lá teria casa e comida para todos. É para a Fazenda Turmalina que seu marido volta, após o tratamento e retoma o trabalho nas roças. Também é lá que nascem mais quatro filhos. Os dias na fazenda não foram tão ruins. Apesar da distância, da falta de recursos, da vida difícil, sem conforto nem amigos por perto, o contato com a natureza permite aos filhos de Paula, uma infância de liberdade e, de certa forma, saudável. Dinheiro não há, mas há um teto e a terra dá a comida. Tirar fruta do pé, legumes da horta, tomar banho de rio, leite de vaca fresquinho, conversar com os animais, caminhar pelas matas, nos deram as poucas lembrança de uma infância saudável. Porém, mais uma vez, meu pai Alexandre é acometido por problemas graves de saúde, e torna-se inadiável o retorno a Jequié, onde a vida fica difícil. Por quatro anos, o aluguel do casebre em que morávamos foi pago por parentes próximos. Mas isso não duraria para sempre, jurei para mim mesmo. Tinha eu dezessete anos quando meu pai faleceu, e trabalhava desde os seis. Já era hora de ajudar minha tão castigada família e assumir as rédeas. Minha mãe, apesar de seu permanente espírito guerreiro, já estava cansada. Passara por todo tipo de sacrifício e humilhação para criar seus filhos. Uma loba a defender sua cria com unhas e dentes num mundo cão. Com todas as agruras, ela conseguiu seu objetivo: criar seus meninos, educando-os com dignidade e apontando-lhes sempre o caminho da retidão moral. Não era vergonha ser pobre, vergonha era escolher os caminhos tortos diante da pressão. Esta lição levaríamos para sempre. Agora a luta era minha também. Eu deveria tomar conta de minha mãe e retribuir todo o seu esforço. A primeira coisa que fiz foi satisfazer-lhe um desejo antigo: ensiná-la a ler e escrever. Passei a ajudar no sustento da casa e na educação de meus irmãos. Não era tarefa fácil para quem tinha uma família de nove pessoas. Havia dias em que pedia forças a Deus para suportar o difícil fardo da sobrevivência. Minha mãe não era mulher de ficar parada. Sem muitas alternativas, ela e os filhos se revezavam pedindo esmolas, de porta em porta. Cenas sombrias guardei na memória: comer carne podre, catar mortadela, salame e queijo dentro do esgoto do hospital, dormir com fome – alimentado somente pelas palavras de consolo de minha mãe: “Espere, que Jesus vai trazer amanhã” –, noites de chuva, com a mobília na calçada por causa dos despejos, à espera de uma solução... Mas Paula sempre manteve viva a chama da esperança e da fé: “No ano que vem as coisas melhoram”, não cansava de dizer – e acreditava nisso. Esperançosos, todos aguardavam pacientes o Ano Novo, que só traria melhoras muitos anos novos depois. A educação básica, em escolas públicas, que Paula nunca deixou faltar aos filhos, era a chama de sua esperança. Sabia que, pela educação, os filhos teriam melhor sorte e um futuro menos doloroso. E ela estava certa. Estudar, para mim, tornou-se obsessão. E foi assim que cheguei até aqui, bem sucedido, com trabalho certo e as cicatrizes fechadas. Meus outros irmãos também encontraram seu caminho e, se não acumularam fortunas ou experimentam hoje uma outra dificuldade, pelo menos conseguiram portos mais seguros em suas vidas. Felizmente, Paula viveu o suficiente para ver que tudo valeu a pena. Hoje, graças a essa senhora do meu destino, eu, que antes esmolava doações de cestas básicas, faço questão de oferecê-las, por ter conhecido a tirania da fome. Hoje, graças a essa senhora do próprio destino, contribuo para promover acesso à cultura, abrindo oportunidades a escritores anônimos. O destino é escrito pelas nossas mãos e pelas nossas lutas. E Paula, minha mãe, escreveu o seu e o nosso com muito suor e dignidade. E é por isso que aqui estou para contar essa novela.

Among the long string of historical albums he created, África Brasil, from 1976, is a milestone in Jorge Ben's career. It is the record in which he definitely swaps the acoustic for the electric guitar. Narrating Jorge Ben's journey, album by album, to África Brasil, the 14th studio LP of his career, the journalist Kamille Viola interviews musicians, producers, researchers and even soccer stars like Zico (honored in the track "Camisa 10 da Gávea" to review the artist's life story and the background details of the album's production. Considered to be the high point in the career of the author of "Umbabarauma", África Brasil comprises alongside A tábua de esmeralda (1974) and Solta o pavão (1975) Ben's inspired "musical alchemy" trilogy. As Jorge Ben recalls in an interview to author of the book: "This guitar was amazing because I was still playing on the Ovation [guitar], and one day one of my musicians, the bass player Dadi, showed up with it and I liked the guitar, I found it beautiful, and I said: 'Dadi, do you want to swap that guitar or sell it or something?' He said 'No, no'. I said: 'Dadi, you're a bass player and I have a Fender bass guitar. We could swap'. And he agreed immediately. So I got the guitar and that was it, we started to 'electrify' (laughs)". Among artists like Gilberto Gil, Marcelo D2, Lúcio Maia, Jorge Du Peixe, Dadi, Gustavo Schroeter and BNegão, interviewed by the author for the book, Mano Brown, leader of the group Racionais MC's and an outspoken admirer, summarizes Jorge Ben's importance: "He's like James Brown, Marvin Gaye, these great artists with a large body of work, from time to time they come to you. The music comes back. I listened to Jorge Ben at several moments of my life, several moments of his career. I recall many phases. [...] In samba sessions, we would sing Jorge Ben. Whoever could sing Jorge Ben in a samba rhythm was doing ok (laughs)." Kamille Viola, a journalist with over 10 years' research on Ben's work, stresses in the book: "Gilberto Gil, Mano Brown, Chico Science and Nação Zumbi: Jorge Ben was a beacon to all of them. Tropicalism, Brazilian rap and manguebeat, three of the most important musical expressions in Brazil, looked to the alchemist for inspiration. If it were not for Jorge Lima Menezes, the Babulina of Rio Comprido, the history of Brazilian music would certainly be different." The Brazilian Music Records series, published in Portuguese and English, is edited by the music critic Lauro Lisboa Garcia.

This book offers a brief overview of the history of Luso-Brazilian science, focusing on the role of the University in developing science in the two countries from the beginning of the 16th century (Brazil was discovered in 1500) until the middle of 1949 (when the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to Egas Moniz, who is still today the only Nobel prize winner in the area of sciences in the whole Portuguese-speaking world). The work attempts to maintain a balance between historical periods, scientific disciplines and authors from each side of the Atlantic, providing a multi-faceted portrait of science in the Luso-Brazilian world.
