At the United Nations Conference of 1943, in Hot Springs, Virginia, a specific plan was drawn up for the establishment of a permanent organization in the field of food and agriculture. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) was founded a few years later, on 16 October 1945 in Quebec City, in Canada, and then temporarily established in Washington, D.C., in the United States of America. On 29 November 1949, the FAO General Conference established that the new permanent headquarters would be located in Rome, Italy. Today, around 11 000 people work for FAO, from almost all of the 194 Member Nations. They include agronomists, ichthyologists, and experts in food security and forestry, as well as in politics, law, economics and social development. This purpose of this book is to recount the Organization’s history, its mission and its day-to-day work in achieving its mandate: to eradicate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition worldwide; eliminate rural poverty; promote the sustainable use of natural resources and encourage the development of more efficient and inclusive agricultural and food systems, through the definition of agreements and standards.

Proceedings of the United Nations Security Council Arria-Formula meeting on Food, Nutrition and Peace, co-hosted by the Permanent Missions of Angola and Spain to the United Nations on 29 March 2016 in New York, USA. The Arria-formula allowed for an informal and fruitful conversation on the topic. The FAO Director-General opened by providing a broad overview on the topic followed by concrete examples illustrating the links between food insecurity and conflict, noting issues that need to be addressed moving forward. This publication prepared by FAO offers the opportunity to further reflect on this issue. Food security and nutrition and food-security related interventions can contribute to conflict prevention and conflict mitigation by building and enhancing social cohesion, addressing root causes or drivers of conflict, and by contributing to the legitimacy of, and trust in, governments. This report provides an overview of developments concerning food security and nutrition in Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Member States. The overview is based on the data available as of mid-2021. The report is organized in seven sections. Following the Introduction, Section 2 introduces the overall approach adopted in the overview and assessment of the food security and nutrition situation in ECO member states. Section 3 reviews the progress made towards the SDG 2 targets using the most recent data from FAO. The data used in the overview do not incorporate COVID-19-related data. Therefore, the potential impact on food security and nutrition of the spread of the virus is presented separately in Section 4, which discusses the potential global and regional effects of COVID-19. Section 5 elaborates on the key linkages between agriculture and nutrition and underlines a nutrition challenge that diversified and nutrition-sensitive agriculture has high potential to overcome. Section 6 discusses prospects for food security and nutrition in ECO member states until 2030. Finally, Section 7 concludes the report, pointing to the need to incorporate the key considerations into country-level food security and nutrition strategies.
