Beragam tanggapan negatif bermunculan. Masyarakat kelas bawah maupun kelas atas sepertinya berpikiran sama dengan apa yang dipikirkan media massa. Citra (Image) yang terbangun di masyarakat atas munculnya pemberitaan tersebut bahwa ISIS adalah kejam dan sadis. Buku yang ada di tangan pembaca saat ini merupakan buku dari hasil riset tentang Komunikasi Masa, dimana riset ini mencoba untuk menganalisa sebuah informasi yang mewartakan suatu kejadian yang anggap sebagai kejadian yang sangat ironis. Analisis yang digunakan sebagai fokus kajian riset ini adalah analisis framing, sintaksis, skrip, sistematik dan retoris. Lima analisis ini pada akhirnya mampu memberikan sebuah simpulkan bahwa berita yang disampaikan dalam informasi tentang ISIS merupakan berita yang belum memenuhi unsur informasi yang riil dan sesuai dengan fakta yang terjadi, sehingga hal ini dianggap belum bisa dianggap benar.

Sedang heboh dengan beredarnya tabloid Indonesia Barokah' (IB). Tim kampanye Prabowo-Sandi memprotes beredarnya tabloid itu. Katanya mereka merasa dipojokkan dengan isi tabloid. Sebab pernyataan yang perlu diuji Sava sendiri mendapatkan tabloid IB versi digitalnya. Saya pelototi satu-satu isinya. Menurut saya- isinya biasa saja. Gak ada berita baru yang dituliskan. Malah kesannya hanya rangkuman berita dari media-media online. Plus dibumbui sedikit opini. Itupun opininya bukan sudut pandang barn. Bagi mereka yang sering membuka-buka medsos- isi tabloid ini babkan bukan termasuk menarik perhatian. Coba bayangkan. Seantero jagad juga sudah tahu bahwa kasus Ratna Sarumpaet yang mengaku digebuki adalah hoaks. Jadi ketika IB menuliskan kasus itu sebagai beaks terbesar menjelang Pilpres, terus apa istimewanya? Ketika redaksi menuliskan bahaya hoaks dan bagaimana menghindarinya. Juga ada artikel soal politisi yang strategi kemenangannya dilakukan dengan menyebar fitnah dan berita bohong. Soal cara mengbindari boaks; itu sama seperti imbauan tim cyber Polri kepada masyarakat Biasa saja. Ada satu artikel mengenai bahaya HTI, ISIS dan gerombolan ekstrimis lain. Ini adalah imbauan yang sangat bagus bagi masyarakat agar tidak terjerumus jadi zombie yang hobi membunuh dan membuat kerusakan. Laporan utama IB mengulas reuni 212. Ulasannya bagus. Redaksi menyampaikan bahwa reuni 212 yang sering menggunakan simbol-simbol agama itu, sebetulnya hanyalah upaya mempolitisasi agama. Reuni itu gak ada hubungannya dengan Islam, tapi melulu urusan politik. Jika reuni 212 cuma urusan politik, lalu mengapa mereka ramai-ramai mengeksploitasi Islam? Ini namanya menunggangi agama untuk kepentingan pribadi dan golongan. Menggunakan ayat-ayat Allah untuk menipu umat. Pada bagian lain ada ulasan mengenai Bank Wakaf Mikro, sebuah program pemerintah yang ditujukan untuk memajukan ekonom umat. Informasinya menarik setidaknya bisa memberi gambaran pada pembacanya mengenai peluang permodalan yang bisa diakses. Balik lagi pertanyaanya: kenapa Prabowo-Sandi merasa isi tabloid itu merugikan mereka? Bagi saya isi tabloid ini positif saja. Sangat jauh berbeda dengan Tabloid Obor Rakyat yang terbit 2014 dulu. Sebagian besar isi Obor Rakyat adalah fitnah keji. Tidak bardasar dan tidak dapat dipertanggungiawabkan. Sementara isi tabloid ini gak ada satupun yang isinya fitnah. Semua clear. Semua bisa dikonfirmasi. Lain mengapa Prabowo-Sandi ketakutan? Mereka ketakutan karena isi tabloid ini menyampaikan sesuatu yang benar. Yang terjadi di masyarakat. Bukan mengada-ada. Kalau masyarakat tabu apa yang sebenarnya terjadi- maka mereka akan jadi lebih cerdas. Mereka akan mulai memilah mana fitnah. Mana berita yang layak dipercaya. Jika demikian, maka strategi membodohi publik gak bisa lagi dilakukan. Jadi mereka marah karena ada pihak lain yang mencoba mencerdaskan publik. Bahkan menurut Bawaslu, isi tabloid ini sama sekali tidak ada unsur kampanyenya. Tidak ada unsur melanggar aturan. Wong cuma kompilasi berita dari media kredibel. Jika memang ada isi tabloid ini yang hoaks atau fitnah, sebetulnya gampang saja. Lapor ke polisi. Tuntut pengelolanya. Tapi apa yang mau dilaporkan jika isinya memang sesuai kenyataan. Makanya tim Prabowo-Sandi pusing tujuh keliling. Sebab mereka biasa bermain dengan berita palsu dan sebar kebohongan. Ada kalanya orang yang selama hidupnya berada di gua yang gelap, akan sakit matanya ketika melihat sinar matahari. []

How right-wing political entrepreneurs around the world use religious offense—both given and taken—to mobilize supporters and marginalize opponents. In the United States, elements of the religious right fuel fears of an existential Islamic threat, spreading anti-Muslim rhetoric into mainstream politics. In Indonesia, Muslim absolutists urge suppression of churches and minority sects, fostering a climate of rising intolerance. In India, Narendra Modi's radical supporters instigate communal riots and academic censorship in pursuit of their Hindu nationalist vision. Outbreaks of religious intolerance are usually assumed to be visceral and spontaneous. But in Hate Spin, Cherian George shows that they often involve sophisticated campaigns manufactured by political opportunists to mobilize supporters and marginalize opponents. Right-wing networks orchestrate the giving of offense and the taking of offense as instruments of identity politics, exploiting democratic space to promote agendas that undermine democratic values. George calls this strategy “hate spin”—a double-sided technique that combines hate speech (incitement through vilification) with manufactured offense-taking (the performing of righteous indignation). It is deployed in societies as diverse as Buddhist Myanmar and Orthodox Christian Russia. George looks at the world's three largest democracies, where intolerant groups within India's Hindu right, America's Christian right, and Indonesia's Muslim right are all accomplished users of hate spin. He also shows how the Internet and Google have opened up new opportunities for cross-border hate spin. George argues that governments must protect vulnerable communities by prohibiting calls to action that lead directly to discrimination and violence. But laws that try to protect believers' feelings against all provocative expression invariably backfire. They arm hate spin agents' offense-taking campaigns with legal ammunition. Anti-discrimination laws and a commitment to religious equality will protect communities more meaningfully than misguided attempts to insulate them from insult.

In a collection of 16 papers, eminent scholars from several disciplines present diverse and yet cohering perspectives on the expression of social knowledge, its acquisition and management. Hence, the volume is an attempt to view the social functions of language in a novel, systematic way. Such an approach has been missing due to the complexity of the matter and the emphasis on purely cognitive properties of language. The volume starts with a presentation of overarching issues of the social nature of humans and their language, providing strong evidence for the social fundaments of human nature and their reflection in language and culture. The second section demonstrates how social functions can be displayed in discourse by using language play and humor, irony and attributions as well as references to social schemas. The chapters in the third part examine a wide range of particular linguistic elements carrying social-cognitive functions. An important finding is that social-cognitive functions have to be inferred on the basis of social knowledge, frequently with the help of non-verbal cues, since languages offer only few direct expressions for them. In other words, linguistic devices used to express social content tend to be multifunctional. Interestingly, this multifunctionality does not prevent their rapid recognition. The volume presents valuable information to linguists by widening the cognitive-linguistic framework and by contributing to a better understanding of the role of pragmatics. It is also beneficial to social and cognitive psychologists by offering a broader view on the encoding and decoding of social aspects. Finally, it offers a number of fruitful ideas to students of cultural and communication studies.
