Membrane Fluidity in Biology, Volume 1: Concepts of Membrane Structure covers membrane properties influenced by alterations in membrane lipid compositions and/or other organizational parameters that are encompassed by the term fluidity. This book is composed of eight chapters that discuss significance of fluidity changes in both normal and pathological cellular functions. This book starts by describing membrane structural organization and composition and arrangement of the molecular components of cell membranes. This is followed by discussions on structural properties of lipids and role of nonbilayer lipid structures in membrane fusion. The methodological approaches in study of cellular membrane structural diversity and fluid mosaic model for accurate representation of membrane fluidity are also discussed. This volume then describes the phenomenon of reversed or ""negative"" membrane images, as viewed with transmission electron microscope. Chapters 6 and 7 explain the interaction of cytochrome P-450 with phospholipids and proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum and steps in the derivation of membrane structure and packing principles. Finally, the concluding chapter focuses on the membrane of the human red blood cell and presents relatively simple arguments concerning its physical properties. The book will serve as a primary source for research scientists and teachers interested in cellular membrane fluidity phenomena.

The aim of this book is to bring together in one volume the current research and thought on the concept of membrane fluidity as a biological phenomenon. The invited articles are intended to review recent develop ments in the areas of membrane research covered and to summarize the current concepts and theories in those areas. The authors have been given ample opportunity to present their thoughts and speculation on membrane fluidity and related phenomena in a more expanded form than is usually possible in reviews of this type. It is hoped that this approach will have a stimulating effect on research and theoretical development in the biomem brane field. The chapters in this book are arranged in three sections, the first of which covers physical studies of membrane fluidity and related phenomena on the molecular level. Included are chapters on intermolecular hydrogen bonding between membrane lipids, thermal analysis of membranes, appli cation of fluorescence and NMR spectrometry to the study of membrane fluidity, and the effect of drugs and other compounds on membrane stability and fluidity. The second section deals with the regulation of membrane fluidity in microorganisms, plants, and higher organisms by factors such as tem perature, fatty acid chain length, lipid desaturation, and polar head group structure.

General Principles written by Ronald Aloia and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-02 with Science categories.

Membrane Fluidity in Biology, Volume 2: General Principles provides an introduction to the fundamental concepts of membrane fluidity. Key topics discussed include lateral phase separations and phase transitions; hydrophobic and electrostatic effects of membrane lipid-protein interactions; isothermal phase transitions and the effects of ionic factors; and the influence of such components as cholesterol, phospholipids, fatty acids, and cellular water on the parameters of membrane fluidity. Each of these topics is elaborated in detail to provide a unique insight into the factors influencing the thermal molecular motions of membrane components, and hence cellular membrane function. Because such activities as membrane transport, enzyme kinetics, and receptor function are modulated by the physical state of the membrane lipids and proteins, a thorough comprehension of the molecular aspects of membrane fluidity is necessary to evaluate the arcane aspects of membrane-related cellular activities. This book will be useful to scientists and researchers concerned with the molecular principles of cellular and organelle function. It also provides an appropriate background for Volume 3, Cellular Aspects and Disease Processes, and for subsequent discussion of the relationship of membrane fluidity to environmental parameters, drugs, anesthetics, and other exogenous agents.

Membrane Fluidity in Biology, Volume 3: Disease Processes focuses on the relationship of membrane lipid alterations and membrane fluidity to various pathological conditions, providing unique phenomenological conceptualizations of disease states. This book compiles comprehensive reviews on topics such as respiratory distress syndrome, diabetes and receptor function, muscular dystrophies, atherosclerosis, alcohol-membrane effects, and lymphocyte function and cancer. This publication also evaluates the interplay between membrane lipid alterations and membrane fluidity and abnormal cellular function, emphasizing how possible alterations in membrane lipids and cholesterol, and consequent changes in membrane fluidity can influence normal cellular activity and lead to pathological cellular function. This volume is intended for molecular and cellular biologists, clinician-scientists struggling with an understanding of the mechanisms of pathological processes, and biophysicists seeking research problems in pathology to study.

Membrane Fluidity in Biology, Volume 4: Cellular Aspects provides a unique interpretation of membrane and cellular activity, as well as cellular aspects of membrane fluidity. This book discusses the influence of membrane fluidity on enzyme activity, function of the sarcoplasmic reticulum in skeletal muscle, role of cholesterol in membrane function, phospholipid methylation, glycosyltransferases, and membrane fusion. The realm of normal cellular function and mechanisms involved in the modulation of cellular function by membrane lipids are also elaborated in this publication. This volume is intended for cell and molecular biologists and clinical-medical scientists, but is also beneficial to individuals researching on the effects of membrane lipids and fluidity in cellular function.

This text attempts to introduce the molecular biology of cell membranes to students and professionals of diverse backgrounds. Although several membrane biology books are available, they do not integrate recent knowledge gained using modern molecular tools with more traditional membrane topics. Molecular techniques, such as cDNA cloning and x-ray diffraction, have provided fresh insights into cell membrane structure and function. The great excitement today, which I attempt to convey in this book, is that molecular details are beginning to merge with physiological responses. In other words, we are beginning to understand precisely how membranes work. This textbook is appropriate for upper-level undergraduate or beginning graduate students. Readers should have previous or concurrent coursework in biochemistry; prior studies in elementary physiology would be helpful. I have found that the presentation of topics in this book is appropriate for students of biology, biochemistry, biophysics and physiology, chemistry, and medicine. This book will be useful in courses focusing on membranes and as a supplementary text in biochemistry courses. Professionals will also find this to be a useful resource book for their personal libraries.
