Here, for the first time, is a thorough critical appraisal of Hans Memling's forte - portraiture - that both illuminates and analyses his extraordinary craftsmanship and serene sensibility. Over thirty of Memling's most spectacular portraits form the core of the exhibition and this catalogue. Additional paintings unique to each venue have been chosen to illustrate topics of particular relevance to Memling's work: the exchange of influences with contemporary portraiture from Italy and Germany (Madrid); issues of patronage relating to donor-portraits (Bruges); and the role of the workshop in artistic production (New York). The superb reproductions are introduced by four essays from Till-Holger Borchert, Lorne Campbell, Paula Nuttall and Maryan Ainsworth, and are accompanied by detailed, explanatory entries that throw new light on Memling's techniques and aims.

According to the defined canons of art technique, a portrait should be, above all, a faithful representation of its model. However, this gallery of 1000 portraits illustrates how the genre has been transformed throughout history, and has proven itself to be much more complex than a simple imitation of reality. Beyond exhibiting the skill of the artist, the portrait must surpass the task of imitation, as just and precise as it may be, to translate both the intention of the artist as well as that of its patron, without betraying eitherÊs wishes. Therefore, these silent witnesses, carefully selected in these pages, reveal more than faces of historic figures or anonymous subjects: they reveal a psychology more than an identity, illustrate an allegory, serve as political and religious propaganda, and embody the customs of their epochs. With its impressive number of masterpieces, biographies, and commentaries on works, this book presents and analyses different portraits, consequently exposing to the reader, and to any art lover, a reflection of the evolution of society, and above all the upheavals of a genre that, over 300 centuries of painting, has shaped the history of art.

Little is known of Memling’s life. It is surmised that he was a German by descent but the definite fact of his life is that he painted at Bruges, sharing with the van Eycks, who had also worked in that city, the honour of being the leading artists of the so-called ‘School of Bruges’. He carried on their method of painting, and added to it a quality of gentle sentiment. In his case, as in theirs, Flemish art, founded upon local conditions and embodying purely local ideals, reached its fullest expression.

"General and theoretical study devoted entirely to portraiture. Drawing on a broad range of images from Antiquity to the twentieth century, which includes paintings, sculptures, prints, cartoons, postage stamps, medals, documents and photographs ... Richard Brilliant investigates the genre as a particular phenomenon in Western art that is especially sensitive to changes in the perceived nature of the individual in society ... Brilliant presents a thematic and cogent analysis of the connections between the subject-matter of portraits and the beholders's response--the response he or she makes to the image itself and to the person it represents ... the power of this imaginative transaction between the subject, the artist and the beholder ... With 85 illustrations, 10 in full colour"--Back cover.
