Here, for the first time, is a thorough critical appraisal of Hans Memling's forte - portraiture - that both illuminates and analyses his extraordinary craftsmanship and serene sensibility. Over thirty of Memling's most spectacular portraits form the core of the exhibition and this catalogue. Additional paintings unique to each venue have been chosen to illustrate topics of particular relevance to Memling's work: the exchange of influences with contemporary portraiture from Italy and Germany (Madrid); issues of patronage relating to donor-portraits (Bruges); and the role of the workshop in artistic production (New York). The superb reproductions are introduced by four essays from Till-Holger Borchert, Lorne Campbell, Paula Nuttall and Maryan Ainsworth, and are accompanied by detailed, explanatory entries that throw new light on Memling's techniques and aims.

Enormously successful during his own lifetime, the 15th-century Flemish painter Hans Memling left a vast legacy of work, including landscapes, portraits, altarpieces and miniatures. Brilliantly colourful, and characterised by an air of fantasy and illusion far removed from the political turbulence and bloodshed of 15th-century Flanders, Memling's paintings have always been extremely popular with the general public. Today Memling enjoys the stature he deserves as one of the true masters of late medieval art, and this volume provides a thorough reassessment of the artist and his work to herald the 500th anniversary of his death.

How To Read Portraits written by Kathryn Calley Galitz and has been published by Metropolitan Museum of Art this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-04-29 with Art categories.

Portraiture goes far beyond capturing a likeness. This intimate genre sheds light on the subjects’ and makers’ politics, relationships, aspirations, and insecurities. Featuring more than fifty works across time and cultures, from the lifelike Faiyum funerary masks of ancient Roman Egypt to Pablo Picasso’s and Marsden Hartley’s abstractions to likenesses imagined by contemporary artists, this publication probes the notion of what constitutes a portrait, beyond mere verisimilitude. Bestselling author Kathryn Calley Galitz illuminates how artists through the ages have exploited the genre to reveal character and convey power and status; how artists as varied as Rembrandt and Cindy Sherman embraced artifice and roleplaying to explore identity; and how the term “portraiture” encompasses a wider variety of works than typically thought. This reexamination of a deceptively familiar genre provides fascinating ideas about what these images can tell us about the sitter, the artist, the culture in which they lived, and ourselves.

Little is known of Memling’s life. It is surmised that he was a German by descent but the definite fact of his life is that he painted at Bruges, sharing with the van Eycks, who had also worked in that city, the honour of being the leading artists of the so-called ‘School of Bruges’. He carried on their method of painting, and added to it a quality of gentle sentiment. In his case, as in theirs, Flemish art, founded upon local conditions and embodying purely local ideals, reached its fullest expression.
