This book isn't primarily about relationships. There's no romance involved--not even any close friendships. It's mostly about flying machines and their missions. But people are important. After all, pilots fly the machines. There are a lot of characters here that aviation buffs will immediately recognize: Lots of record-setting test pilots, and even some astronauts. Older non-buffs will also see familiar names: an aviation legend, first-ever moon walkers, a couple of popular entertainers, a famous TV-news anchor and even two former presidential candidates. Watch closely, some of them just flash past. Airplanes star in this tale. None of them were perfect, but many of them excelled performing their assigned tasks. North American Aircraft's F-86F was a beautiful machine. But it was also a breathtakingly-good MiG killer. Because of its fine flying qualities, it was fun to fly--a sports car among sedans. Fairchild/Chase Aircraft's C-123B was an outstanding assault transport. It was almost perfect for its mission in Vietnam, but it could be a real handful for any pilot to fly. I have lots of "favorite" airplanes, but Douglas' A-1H Skyraider stands out. There has never been a better attack fighter in terms of accuracy in iron-bomb delivery, weapons load-carrying ability or endurance. Lockheed's F-104A or C models were many pilot's dream machines. Their luster dimmed somewhat for me after I flew them. But they were certainly suitable for training Test Pilot School students to perform zooms and shuttle-aircraft type approaches and landings. I'll stop with these four. There's much more on airplanes inside--about 192,000 words worth. That's a lot to slog through and you may find some parts too technical or too detailed. Ignore them. There are also many numbers, but most aren't important. Browse for good stuff. If you want more info on some airplane, Google her up.

The first ten to fifteen years part of the book was about that part of Marvin's life where he had to learn about befriending other people. To make friends and be respected Marvin always stuck by telling no lies and always sticking with the truth. In his later years, he went to work at a silver mine called the Sunshine Mine. As he became a maintenance electrician, and had to cover the whole mine. He'd been in places and seen things that most people would have nightmares about. He was in the area where the fire started on the night shift before it happened and saw what started it that killed ninety-one men. One of the most intelligent men Marvin ever met was an officer in the SEAL Team in the US Navy. His name was Mark Shaw and he was also his neighbor. After Marvin was befriended by Mark, he was asked to do some work for him. For about twenty years, Marvin did numerous jobs for Mark: some he is at liberty to write about, but others were confidential government jobs. Mark and his Navy SEAL friends taught Marvin how to become a diver and what to do and what not to do in the water. Most of his work was underwater. Water where you could only see about six inches with a good flashlight, and the water temperature never got over 50 degrees. They made equipment for all the SEAL teams and tested and designed them other equipment. Marvin said being able to talk and work with ex-SEALs was one of the most impressive jobs he have ever had. Mark Shaw died at the age of sixty-four.

On March 27, 1950, the author turned 17; ten days later he enlisted in the U.S. Army. During his training in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, he first learned of the "police action" in Korea, and like many others he volunteered for duty there. His biggest fear was that the action would be over by the time he arrived in Korea. Private Morrow was assigned as a rifleman in the 24th Infantry Regiment Combat Team, one of the most outstanding units in Korea and the last all black army unit; he served with distinction until he was wounded. After a short stint in Pusan, he became a paratrooper and rigger in the 8081st Airborne and Resupplying Company stationed in southern Japan. Throughout his time in the service, Private Morrow had to face the institutional racism of the U.S. Army where black soldiers consistently served longer and performed more dangerous duties than white soldiers. The effects of this on the 18-year-old private were longterm--and are described here.
