He was the first - and still is the finest - literary dope fiend, in a lineage leading through to William Burroughs. He mined his own psyche for material because that was what he had to hand when he needed cash to buy drugs; he made no claim that the confessions will do us - or him - any good at all.There was a good deal of psychological trauma to mine. De Quincey never recovered from the shock of his sister's death when he was a child and he dwelt on the details of her corpse and post-mortem to a disquieting degree. He was bullied by his elder brother and, in defense, developed a mean, despicable personality, hoping his brother would consider him so contemptible he would not want to play with him. His mother taught him he was worthless, he felt he was the "refuse of the universe". De Quincey ran away from school and took up with "noble-minded Ann" of Oxford Street, a 15-year-old prostitute, his "partner in wretchedness", who shared what little she had with him. He first took opium as a treatment for pain and immediately discovered it was the drug for him, as he put it in typically unrestrained prose: "Here was the secret of happiness, about which philosophers had disputed for so many ages, at once discovered: happiness might now be bought for a penny, and carried in the waistcoat pocket." He believed it elevated his "moral affections" and enhanced his intellect. He first started taking opium holidays every three weeks; then Saturday night was opium night. Inevitably, his intake became daily, and then virtually hourly. In his Confessions of an Opium Eater, De Quincey gives us his life story and shares such opium-induced reveries as travel with the goddess Levana in her three kingdoms of grief.

Thomas De Quincey, an English essayist during the turn of the nineteenth century, began life as a fairly sickly child, and would spend much of his life in the grips of one illness or another. Through a series of misguided attempts at getting an education, De Quincey dropped out of college and instead became a vagrant. The youth barely had enough food to eat and resorted to begging in order to survive. These years served as a depressing foundation for his later years, which were marred by isolation and solitude. After eventually returning to and graduating from university, De Quincey became a journalist and translator. His works gained little popularity. De Quiney's resulting depression crippled him, and the forlorn man turned to opium in order to escape from reality. The use quickly turned to abuse, though, which was the subject of De Quincey's most famous work "Confessions of an English Opium-Eater." The piece made him an overnight sensation as it detailed his personal background and spiraling drug abuse. De Quincey revised and republished the piece a number of times in order to address questions and criticisms that the population had about his portrayal of the addiction. This essay, along with three other works, are included in the collection "Confessions of an English Opium-Eater and Other Writings."

The author Thomas De Quincey was an English essayist who studied at Worcester College, Oxford, where, we are told, "he came to be looked upon as a strange being who associated with no one." During this time he began to take opium. He became an acquaintance of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth, having already sought out Charles Lamb in London. His acquaintance with Wordsworth led to his settling in 1809 at Grasmere, in the Lake District. He died in Edinburgh and is buried in St Cuthbert's Churchyard. His book on opium addiction is broken down into three main parts; The Pleasures of Opium, which discusses the early and largely positive phase of the author's experience with the drug. Introduction to the Pains of Opium, which delivers a second installment of autobiography, taking De Quincey from youth to maturity; and The Pains of Opium, which recounts the extreme of the author's opium experience insomnia, nightmares, frightening visions, and difficult physical symptoms.

Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-Confessions of an English Opium-Eater (1821) is an autobiographical account written by Thomas De Quincey about his addiction to laudanum and its effect on his life. The Confessions was "the first great work published by De Quincey and the one that earned him fame almost overnight ..." First published anonymously in September and October 1821 in the London Magazine, the Confessions It was released as a book in 1822, and again in 1856, in an edition reviewed by De Quincey. As originally published, De Quincey's account was organized in two parts: Part I begins with a notice "To the reader", to establish the narrative framework: "Here I present you, polite reader, with the record of a remarkable period in my life ...
