About the Author Sadhan Majumder, Ph.D., is a professor of Genetics at a major cancer center in the United States. Professor Majumder has published many outstanding scientific papers and edited the book, "Stem Cells and Cancer." His parents were first-generation immigrants in India and he himself is a first-generation immigrant in the US. He has traveled extensively throughout the world and experienced many cultures. Here he presents a unique, heart-warming memoir on life, science, religion, health, cancer, and parenting. Professor Majumder describes his humorous journey from a small city in India to New York to study science and discover ways to help patients. Arriving in New York with $200 in his pocket and a suitcase in his hand that his mom had packed, the challenges of life could never make a dent in his enthusiasm. He details his failures and successes. He emphasizes what he has learned about the importance of expressing appreciation for others and developing the traits of tenacity, courage and determination. He translates his experiences to illustrate how our fear of the unfamiliar molds our behavior, our biases including racism, and how politics impacts science and our lives. He also shares accessible scientific explanations of how things work, reflecting his curiosity about all aspects of the universe and the amazing world we inhabit and the mysteries of the human body and mind. He finds a connection between science and God. Professor Majumder shows how his first lesson in a microbiology lab illuminates the COVID-19 pandemic. Building on some of his early research, he suggests how we grow from a single cell in the womb to a full human being. He makes the connection between cancer and embryonic development. He chronicles his discovery of how a molecule called REST drives a group of brain tumors by controlling cancer stem cells, and how he engineered this same molecule to convert muscle cells into neurons. He recounts meeting the woman who almost did not marry him and his path to changing her mind. He proposes the scientific basis for the rebellious behavior of teenagers such as his twins and that this behavior is to be expected as a process of normal growing up. He lives in Houston with his wife and twins. Please connect with him at www.grandsingularity.com or [email protected].

When Jane, a world-famous Harvard oncologist, suddenly collapses at work, the medical team resuscitating her makes a shocking discovery: she has advanced breast cancer that she’s been hiding for years. The results are catastrophic. In Sickness shows how even the most rational people can be nearly destroyed by their irrational fears. Heartbreaking, emotional – and totally and utterly uplifting and hopeful.' - Deborah James (@bowelbabe), writer and broadcaster 'May be the most heartbreaking medical memoir you'll read.' - Daily Mail ---- An extraordinary memoir that explores the further reaches of today's cancer science – alongside a deeply tender story of loss, grief and love. When Henry Scowcroft's partner Zarah was diagnosed with stage IV bladder cancer in her mid-thirties, their world fell apart. In order to cope with the upheaval as they endured scans, aggressive chemotherapy and hospital stays, Henry began writing down and sharing their experiences with friends and family. His day job as a writer for the charity Cancer Research UK helped him to explain everything he was learning from the coalface of cancer treatment – including Zarah's diagnosis, and their rollercoaster journey through the health system. After Zarah's untimely death Henry found some closure and comfort by trying to learn more about her cancer from scientific analysis of the test results and biopsies taken during her treatment, and enlisted a team of doctors and researchers to help him. Could he have done more? How did Zarah's tumour develop? Could there be a legacy from her death that would help others diagnosed with cancer? This heart-wrenching memoir of love and loss is interspersed with Henry's mission to understand the cancer that took his partner too soon.

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • PULITZER PRIZE FINALIST • This inspiring, exquisitely observed memoir finds hope and beauty in the face of insurmountable odds as an idealistic young neurosurgeon attempts to answer the question What makes a life worth living? NAMED ONE OF PASTE’S BEST MEMOIRS OF THE DECADE • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • People • NPR • The Washington Post • Slate • Harper’s Bazaar • Time Out New York • Publishers Weekly • BookPage Finalist for the PEN Center USA Literary Award in Creative Nonfiction and the Books for a Better Life Award in Inspirational Memoir At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade’s worth of training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. And just like that, the future he and his wife had imagined evaporated. When Breath Becomes Air chronicles Kalanithi’s transformation from a naïve medical student “possessed,” as he wrote, “by the question of what, given that all organisms die, makes a virtuous and meaningful life” into a neurosurgeon at Stanford working in the brain, the most critical place for human identity, and finally into a patient and new father confronting his own mortality. What makes life worth living in the face of death? What do you do when the future, no longer a ladder toward your goals in life, flattens out into a perpetual present? What does it mean to have a child, to nurture a new life as another fades away? These are some of the questions Kalanithi wrestles with in this profoundly moving, exquisitely observed memoir. Paul Kalanithi died in March 2015, while working on this book, yet his words live on as a guide and a gift to us all. “I began to realize that coming face to face with my own mortality, in a sense, had changed nothing and everything,” he wrote. “Seven words from Samuel Beckett began to repeat in my head: ‘I can’t go on. I’ll go on.’” When Breath Becomes Air is an unforgettable, life-affirming reflection on the challenge of facing death and on the relationship between doctor and patient, from a brilliant writer who became both.
