DIVA successful former defense attorney exposes the raw truth about the courtroom “game” and a career spent defending the guilty/divDIV As an advocate for the accused in Newark, New Jersey, criminal lawyer Seymour Wishman defended a vast array of clients, from burglars and thieves to rapists and murderers. Many of them were poor and undereducated, and nearly all of them were guilty. But it was not Wishman’s duty to pass moral judgment on those he represented. His job was to convince a jury to set his clients free or, at the very least, to impose the most lenient punishment permissible by law. And he was very good at his job. Reveling in the adrenaline rush of “winning,” Wishman gave no thought to the ethical considerations of his daily dealings . . . until he was confronted on the street by a rape victim he had humiliated in the courtroom./divDIV /divDIVA fascinating, no-holds-barred memoir of his years spent as “attorney for the damned,” Wishman’s Confessions of a Criminal Lawyer is a startling and important work—an eye-opening, thought-provoking examination of how the justice system works and how it should work—by an attorney who both defended and prosecuted those accused of the most horrific crimes./div

True crime stories covering the more than forty year career of a defense attorney who tried to verdict more than twenty homicide cases. A number of these cases and other cases which might be of interest to the reader are described in narrative form and include the story of the defense of a serial killer and the defense of a Russian woman accused along with her mother of murdering her grandmother and grandfather. Both cases involved the defense of insanity. The serial killer was a psychotic racist who terrorized New York City for one day in December of 1980. Previously he had wantonly murdered ten young black men in Buffalo, N.Y. before killing four more in New York City and wounded two others. The Russian women were accused of killing the grandparents while suffering from a folie a deux or shared paranoid delusion. Folie a deux is roughly translated as "the madness of two". The story describes the murder scene which was described in the media as an occult killing, the tragic circumstances leading up to murders and the mental state of the women which precipitated the murders. The book begins with my life immediately after college and my near fatal experience in the Marine Corps. Shortly after I left the Marine Corps I moved to New York City. I always had a vague notion about becoming a lawyer so that summer I took the Law School Aptitude Test. I did not start law school until a few years after taking the LSAT. During the interim I had a job as a buyers assistant with the famous men's clothier Brooks Brothers and then with the Public Health Service as an epidemiologist tracking down the sexual contacts of those infected with venereal disease. Most of those I dealt with were gay men living in the upper west side of Manhattan. I describe my life as an epidemiologist before the AIDS virus had been identified. Some of it amusing and most of it gritty and shocking. My life as a state sponsored vampire extracting viles of blood from those who might be infected came to an abrupt end due to excessive lateness but I did manage to set a record for those brought to treatment when I talked a prostitute out of her little black book which contained the names of more than four hundred of her customers. Most of the customers were Chinese men living on the lower east side. I then started a job as a caseworker for the New York City Department of Social Services where I learned more about drug addiction and criminality than I had ever known previously. It formed the basis of learning about the population who lived on the fringes of society and with whom I would deal with for my entire life as a criminal defense attorney. Also during this period of time, I finally applied to law school but not before I took at least two unauthorized vacations to Europe. At the end of one of those unauthorized sojourns I walked into the office of the Attorney-in-Chief of the Legal Aid Society, Criminal Defense Division and asked for a job as a paralegal before the word was invented. I had been admitted to the evening division of New York Law School and needed to support myself accepting no money from my parents. I was assigned to work with a Legal Aid lawyer who specialized in post conviction remedies. As part of my job, I was obliged to travel to Rikers Island Correctional Facility once per week where I had to deal with many dangerously psychotic inmates and an equally psychotic lawyer who was my mentor. My last two years as a paralegal was spent in Manhattan doing bail applications as a senior law student in the Supreme Court on behalf of individuals whose original bail was thought to be too high. Most of these stories are amusing. You can read the table of contents of the names of the few other trials of the more than three hundred I have conducted in my career. A rare glimpse into the secret world of the criminal courts. The descriptions in this book are not for the feint of heart.

It brings to vivid life lawyers, judges, and crooks, revealing their character, their demeanor, their authentic speech, and their seriocomic lives.

Subhas Anandan, who passed away in January 2015 surely was the face of criminal defense in Singapore. But why did he choose to represent clients who were to all intents and purposes guilty? And were the criminals he represented the monsters they were made out to be? Did he ever feel sorry for the clients he represented? What were his views on the death penalty, and which parts of the legal system did he want reformed? Read all about this in The Best I Could."

REVIEWS 'This is a gripping memoir from one of our country's greatest jury advocates, offering a fascinating, no-holds-barred tour behind the scenes of some of the most famous criminal cases of modern times.' — The Secret Barrister 'Countless veteran lawyers have produced page-tuners based in the fictional world of law, but in Under the Wig William Clegg, QC, has distilled his extraordinary life in the criminal courtroom into a yarn equally as gripping.' — The Times 'One of England's best barristers provides a fascinating sometimes hilarious combination of a personal odyssey and insider accounts of the most important and famous court cases of recent times. 'From the infamous case of Colin Stagg and the Wimbledon Murders to war crimes in Belarus and Bosnia and the Murdoch phone hacking trials we share and applaud the author's deep commitment to justice and his infectious enthusiasm for one of the world's greatest professions. An absolute must read for anyone who aspires to join it (and anyone who already has.)' — Bob Marshall-Andrews QC 'Bill Clegg's memoir draws on some of the most high-profile criminal prosecutions of recent years to illuminate the career of a defence lawyer at the peak of his success. 'Deftly weaving personal reminiscences into the view from counsel's bench, he solves one high-profile murder case long before the police and ensures that justice is finally done in another after the tactics adopted by a better-known QC have led to a miscarriage of justice.' 'Unlike many works of this genre, Clegg's case-book eschews endless exchanges with long-forgotten judges, lawyers and villains. Like the successful jury advocate that he is, Clegg reduces his story to its essence. He speaks plainly, sparing us the the bombast and the braggadocio. And those who still aspire to join the criminal bar will learn more from Clegg than Clegg ever did from Perry Mason.' — Joshua Rozenberg QC

Law Man written by Shon Hopwood and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with Imprisonment categories.

Shon Hopwood was a good kid from a good Nebraskan family. Those who knew him well would never have imagined that, as a young man, he'd be adrift with few prospects and plotting to rob a bank. But he did, committing five armed bank robberies before being apprehended. Serving ten years in federal prison, Shon feared his life was over. He wasn't sure if he could survive a cell block, but he was determined to try. Hopwood pumped-up in the prison gym to defend himself and earned respect on the basketball court. He reconnected with the girl of his dreams from high school through letters and prison visits; and, crucially, he talked his way into a job in the prison law library. Hopwood slowly taught himself criminal law and began to help fellow inmates rather than himself. He wrote one petition to the Supreme Court, which was chosen to be heard from over 7,000 other petitions submitted by the greater legal community that year. The Justices voted 9-0 in favor of Hopwood's petition when the case was finally heard. What might have been considered luck by some, was dispelled when a second petition from him was selected to be heard by the Supreme Court. He didn't grasp it yet, but Shon's legal work was the start of a new life. Shon works on policy reform, and he is a cofounder of PrisonProfessors.com. He strives to improve outcomes of America's prison system, and he tells his amazing story in Law Man.
