Excerpt from The Necessity of Preserving the Memorials of the Past and of Transmitting to Posterity a Just and Impartial History of North Carolina: An Address Delivered Before the Alumni Association of the University of North Carolina, June 4, 1890, in Memorial Hall at Chapel Hill Remarkable as emanating from such a source; surprising in its exhibition of unfairness, I would not say ignorance, on the subject he was treating. Listen, friends and fellow citizens! In 1755 the Assembly of North Carolina passed an act appropriating 6,000, equal to $150,000 in the money of to-day, for the endowment of a public school for the Province, and resolved "that under a sense of the many advantages that will arise to the Province from giving our youth a liberal education, whether considered in a moral, religious or political light, a public school or seminary of learning be erected and properly endowed, and for effecting the same the sum of 6,000 already appropriated for that purpose be properly applied." But earlier than this. In his will, dated July 5, 1754, Col. James Innes, of the Cape Fear, and at the time Commander-in-chief of the expedition to the Ohio against the "French and their Indians," gave his plantation, Point Pleasant, a considerable personal estate, his library and 100 sterling "for the use of a free school for the benefit of the youth of North Carolina." This bequest, says Col. Saunders, was the first private bequest of the kind in the history of the State. But more remarkable still was the action of the Halifax Congress of November, 1776. This Congress adopted a Constitution and Bill of Rights for the people of North Carolina. It came together on the eve of a great civil war to deliberate upon the most solemn, delicate and difficult of all human undertakings. The time of its meeting was memorable. Rejoicings for the victory of Moore's Creek were still filling the air; the skirmishings at Lexington and Concord and the battle of Bunker's Hill had taken place the April and June of the previous year. Excerpt from Memorials and Monuments, Old and New: Two Hundred Subjects Chosen From Seven Centuries After the war in South Africa hundreds of monuments of all kinds were set up, in thankful remembrance of those who there gave up their lives. Nine years later Sir James Gildea under took the pious task Of illustrating in For Remembrance: South A fried 1899 - 1902 a con siderable number of them, some set up to regiments and others to individual officers. He succeeded in his chief purpose, which was one of grateful record, but the result revealed the exceeding poverty of memorial design in Great Britain. It is clear that the artistic ability of the men Who build and adorn our churches and public buildings is not employed as it should be on the memorials which they so often contain. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries there was a sound tradition which gave pleasant shape to divers sorts of memorials, Whether brasses, incised slabs, wall tablets, tombs or headstones. To-day many of the persons who are curiously called. Monu mental masons bring to their task neithereducated taste nor the knowledge of good historical examples they are often, moreover, incompetent in their craftsmanship. The more important shops which purvey marble monu ments are, if anything, rather worse, for they stereotype bad designs, which are the more offensive because more ambitious and costly. The clerical tailors who sell most of the engraved brasses have mainly succeeded in making that form of memorial the most dreary. All three sources of supply have added a new terror to death. In earlier days, when monuments were not only honourable memorials of the dead, but works of art which gave joy to the living, the finest skill of architects and sculptors, working together, went to their making. The purpose of this book is not so much to provide a historical account of the development of those types of memorials which are the most suitable for present use, as to focus attention on good examples, old and new. That is not to say that old forms Should be Copied exactly we are not so bankrupt of invention that we need be driven that way - but they give valuable guidance as to proportion, use of materials, spacing of lettering and the like. The new works are illustrated to Show that their designers have paid homage to sound traditions and have brought new thought to the solution of difficult problems. Memorials In The Aftermath Of Armed Conflict written by Marie Louise Stig Sørensen and has been published by Palgrave Macmillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-01-02 with Social Science categories.

Through case studies from Europe and Russia, this volume analyses memorials as a means for the present to make claims on the past in the aftermath of armed conflict. The central contention is that memorials are not backward-looking, inert reminders of past events, but instead active triggers of personal and shared emotion, that are inescapably political, bound up with how societies reconstruct their present and future as they negotiate their way out of (and sometimes back into) conflict. A central aim of the book is to highlight and illustrate the cultural and ethical complexity of memorials, as focal points for a tension between the notion of memory as truth, and the practice of memory as negotiable. By adopting a relatively bounded temporal and spatial scope, the volume seeks to move beyond the established focus on national traditions, to reveal cultural commonalities and shared influences in the memorial forms and practices of individual regions and of particular conflicts.

This collection of newly published essays examines our relationship to physical objects that invoke, commemorate, and honor the past. The recent destruction of cultural heritage in war and controversies over Civil War monuments in the US have foregrounded the importance of artifacts that embody history. The book invites us to ask: How do memorials convey their meanings? What is our responsibility for the preservation or reconstruction of historically significant structures? How should we respond when the public display of a monument divides a community? This anthology includes coverage of the destruction of Palmyra and the Bamiyan Buddhas, the loss of cultural heritage through war and natural disasters, the explosive controversies surrounding Confederate-era monuments, and the decay of industry in the U.S. Rust Belt. The authors consider issues of preservation and reconstruction, the nature of ruins, the aesthetic and ethical values of memorials, and the relationship of cultural memory to material artifacts that remain from the past. Written by a leading group of philosophers, art historians, and archeologists, the 23 chapters cover monuments and memorials from Dubai to Detroit, from the instant destruction of Hiroshima to the gradual sinking of Venice.

The Past Made Present written by Yiran Zheng and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Berlin (Germany) categories.

Since the 1990s, memorial making in Germany has been dominated by a trend of "countermonuments". In the belief that straightforward representations of the Holocaust in an urban surrounding as a public gesture would make it less urgent for the viewers to engage in the memorial, artists who dedicate themselves to "countermonuments" attempt to invite the viewers to actively interpret the meaning of the work for themselves. This trend coincides with a broader trend in memorial design, following the modernist and constructivist movements in art and architecture, which has shifted away from explicit representation toward the use of more abstract forms, and focuses visitors' attention on the shape and material of the artwork. This paper will examine three memorials in Berlin, namely the Mirrored Wall Memorial, Places of Remembrance and the Garden of Exile, with a focus on their contexts and artistic expressions. Featuring a direct phenomenological interaction with the site and space around them, these memorials associate their viewers with the historic contexts of the sites in their unique way. In doing so, a knowledge and understanding of the past is accessible within the present.
