Por fin llego al país que soñó conocer, Japón, el cual lo impresiono con su cultura y su historia. La artritis reumatoidal comenzó a afectar sus rodillas; tiempo después su carrera de marino mercante llegaría a su fin. Ernesto recuerda que a través de los años navegando, algunas noches salía a cubierta y miraba en soledad las aguas del mar iluminadas por la luz que regalaba la luna. Levantaba la mirada y veía las estrellas resplandecientes y contemplando ese espectáculo tan hermoso, sentía paz y gozo en todo su ser.
