Un pueblo que pervive a través del deporte, este sería el título que pudiera haber encabezado esta obra. Sin embargo, a pesar de que el mismo no jalona la portada de este ejemplar que usted tiene entre sus manos, en el, la/el estimado lector/a podrá acercarse a conocer los orígenes y evolución de un movimiento deportivo alternativo al burgués del que emergería con fuerza la estructuración del deporte obrero castellano. Vinculado a las líneas comunistas y socialistas este ente deportivo, gracias a su flexibilidad táctica, conseguiría edificar todo un movimiento de soporte a la Olimpíada Popular de Barcelona de 1936, que se mostraría en toda su amplitud en el envío de una selección castellana compuesta por atletas madrileños, castellanoleoneses, castellanomanchegos… a la cita olímpica antifascista. Cita que supondría una erosión de los consensos burgueses del deporte, ya que rompería el monopolio del Estado en la competición internacional e implementaría diversas medidas de discriminación positiva hacia la participación de la mujer. Del mismo modo, también supondría la superación de algunas tónicas del deporte proletario, como el aparente antagonismo entre el deporte obrero y federativo. A lo largo de las páginas de este manuscrito, el/la interesado/a lector/a podrá conocer un pasado histórico que permanecía oculto a los ojos de la historia, el cual ha logrado ser reconstruido por el autor gracias al uso de centenares de fuentes hemerográficas y archivísticas, así como de diversas fuentes orales, las cuales ponen de manifiesto la configuración de un movimiento deportivo alternativo al burgués, que singularizó a Castilla como una “rara avis” en Europa.

Historia del deporte obrero en España pretende dar a conocer la concepción del deporte y las propuestas relacionadas con el mismo y con la actividad física en general que durante el primer tercio del siglo XX llevaron a cabo las organizaciones obreras de clase. Se trata, por tanto, de una obra que, fundamentada en un amplio catálogo de fuentes hemerográficas y archivísticas, muchas de ellas inéditas, analiza el movimiento deportivo obrero desde sus comienzos hasta el final de la guerra civil.Siguiendo una secuencia temporal, el libro estudia las iniciativas socialistas en pro de la educación física infantil y del desarrollo de las colonias escolares de vacaciones, la figura de Juan Almela Meliá como pionero del deporte proletario, los grupos deportivos obreros y sus diferentes secciones –fútbol, excursionismo, alpinismo, atletismo…- y los contactos con la Internacional Deportiva Socialista. Se ocupa también de los planteamientos y realizaciones del anarquismo y del comunismo y de la división que, al socaire de lo que ocurría a nivel internacional, enfrentó a socialistas y comunistas –seguidores, estos últimos, de la Internacional Deportiva Roja- por la dirección del deporte obrero y popular. Un capítulo particularmente interesante en este sentido es el que aborda la lucha por el control de la Federación Cultural Deportiva Obrera, la más importante de todas las plataformas deportivas puestas en pie y que llegará a convertirse en una verdadera organización de masas.Finalmente, se profundiza en las realizaciones que las organizaciones obreras llevaron a cabo durante la guerra civil. Su protagonismo en la política de incautaciones de clubes y entidades “burguesas”, la creación de batallones deportivos, la participación española en la última Olimpiada Obrera o en la actividad deportiva que tuvo lugar tanto en los frentes como en la retaguardia, son algunas de las cuestiones que se analizan en este último apartado.
