Il 19 maggio 1978, con un proiettile calibro 22, Marie-Jo si uccide nel suo appartamento di Parigi. È un suicidio annunciato, e del resto più volte tentato: dopo essere stata una bambina «difficile», Marie-Jo era entrata sin dall’adolescenza in un ciclo infernale di cliniche, fughe, ospedali psichiatrici. Come lei stessa ha chiesto, il corpo viene trasportato a Losanna e cremato, le ceneri disperse nel giardino della casa del padre. Da quel momento Simenon si immerge nella lettura delle lettere, delle agende, delle poesie e nell’ascolto delle cassette lasciate dalla figlia; e nel 1980 a settantasei anni, lui che dal febbraio del 1972 ha smesso di produrre romanzi compone febbrilmente queste "Memorie". Per commemorare la figlia, ma anche per placare insieme il dolore e i sensi di colpa, si affida alla forza inappellabile del ricordo, e dà vita a una sorta di grande affresco autobiografico, completato dalla raccolta dei pochi scritti che la ragazza, segnata da una irrisolta vocazione artistica, ha lasciato: il "Libro di Marie-Jo". Dedicate alla sua creatura perduta, le pagine di questa straordinaria «confessione» hanno in realtà un solo protagonista: lo stesso Simenon, qui al centro di quello che è forse il più imponente dei suoi romanzi, dove la sapienza del narratore si coniuga a una «cognizione del dolore» tutta nuova, e in qualche modo stupefacente per l’autore stesso.
