This is an attempt to bring to life some of the memories of joys, hardships, and lessons learned from life in the 1930s and 1940s in the great nation, the United States of America. With the Depression and World Wars I and II came a need for people to care for each other in order to survive and to save and rebuild families and communities. Our family had extremely limited resources but extremely unlimited desires for a dignified lifestyle in the midst of those hardships. Family and friends were one and the same when it came to caring for each other. How blessed we would all be if the lessons learned back then were applied to our day-by-day lives today. Today, many neighbors are strangers to each other, and there seems to be a general disregard for the needs of others. Consequently, the government has been able to move in quickly to fill the gap at the expense of the dignity of the people of our great nation. Freedom is not without struggle and strife for life, liberty, and dignity. Thank you.

These events took place during prohibition, World War II, and the time after the war was won, during the ’40s and ’50s. The immigrants and first- and second-generation Americans were closely loved family members who always had one another’s back while striving to reach their dreams of security and wealth. It’s a story of a young family member who experienced most of what happened, good and bad, in life at a young age. Each individual is based upon a person that lived, to a degree, more or less, through the events as they happened. Dishonest, self-serving government people and how they used their authority to cheat and lie at the expense of anyone in their way, especially the immigrants, give reason for actions taken that were felt to be necessary even though gruesome. This story will appeal to all immigrants, but especially, to Sicilian Italians, and their extended families. Giovanni, be well.

The story is a memoir. It’s a slice of history—the story of Gimli, Manitoba—come to life. There’s the mystique of rail travel; there’s rafting on the pond; there’s swimming at the harbour. There’s dancing to the Men of Note. There are bonfires and bull rushes and bicycling the town; the tastes of Central Bakery; the fun of pinball at Sam’s Café; and the vibes of the Falcon. This book is about adventures that define summer life in Gimli for a city lad. In addition, there’s the story of family and their struggles in the 1930s against a backdrop of happier times at the cottage. Joe Mackintosh uses personal stories and family history to paint a picture of what Gimli means, not only to his own family, but to so many other people. Readers will find their imagination kindled anew as they follow the town map and visit Gimli as it was in the 30s, 40s and 50s.

Feminism And Social Justice In Education written by Kathleen Weiler and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-08-04 with Education categories.

After more than twenty years of feminist education research, policy development and innovative school practice, it seems appropriate to evaluate the impact and significance of this world wide struggle for social justice in education. At the same time, the recent restructuring of educational provision whether in the name of sexual equality or the ideologies of the New Right also requires a considered response from Those Committed To Promoting Greater Social Equality.; This Collection offers a unique opportunity to host an international forum on contemporary thinking and practice, not just within different national contexts, but for feminism more generally. ln adopting a critical feminist approach, the chapters re-establish such egalitarian traditions as radical feminism, black feminism and socialist feminism and address such themes as the interrelation between social class, race and gender and the ways these articulate with feminist educational practice.; In gathering together leading educators from five different countries all committed to the project of social transformation, this book represents the shifting concerns of the feminist theoretical debate and helps formulate feminist educational agendas more suited to the political and economic conditions which orevail in the 19905.

I guess, in truth, “Reno by the/in the Lake” is my “Autobiography Light.” The material is indeed autobiographical in that little has been gleaned from any outside source and it is definitely light both in serious content and the serious nature often portrayed by an autobiography. So read on just for fun. Reno Beach was a magical place in the 1920s, ’30s, ’40s and ’50s, a resort town that never really quite reached its prime. It had, however attained great stature in the hearts and minds of all it entertained, especially in the imagination of a young boy who could see adventure, even in the smallest buttonhole or banal blemish. In his mind a vegetable garden became a wilderness plantation. An overturned rowboat became a fortress, a pirate’s treasure cave or a magician’s maudlin mansion. A willow tree only recently uprooted by the wind and waves of an angry possessive lake trying desperately to reclaim its own; this became the perfect home for “Tarzan (Jimmie) of the Apes.” The fact that I’m even writing this book belies the fact that the place and that little boy still live, if only in my imagination. The stories you’re about to read are about that small waterfront community just east of Toledo Ohio on the western end of Lake Erie and how it’s life; death and frequent revitalizations affected the life of one small boy, namely me. The stories are absolutely true except as altered by an aging memory, wishful thinking and delusions of grandeur, not necessarily in that order, and they represent some of the very best days of my life. I’ve been told that it’s good to share your very best. I hope you enjoy reading my stories nearly as much as I enjoyed living them. The writing’s been fun too. Some names and places may have been altered to protect the innocent and/or the guilty, but not many. Some may also be changed just because I’ve forgotten or don’t really know what I’m talking about. Please forgive me. Many may recognize themselves, a friend or family member in some of these stories and each one probably deserves whatever treatment or attention they received, either good or bad. This book is intended to be a “Bathroom Book.” This is not a negative. For those unable to grasp this creative terminology I provide the following explanation in the form of a prescription: Take in small doses. Continuous exposure could be hazardous to your health and could lead to an abrasive situation requiring an immediate application of Preparation “H.” This does not imply that either you the reader or the writer is full of . . . Anything. Should you disapprove of any of the material in this book please feel free to remove the offending pages and put them to better use right there in the “Reading Room” solving the problems of the moment. I’m sure you understand. Enjoy. Life is short. Don’t waste it on seriousness.

There is a growing body of scientific knowledge regarding development during the middle years which has so far been relegated to discipline-specific texts and journals (e.g., clinical psychology and endocrinology). Life in the Middle consolidates main findings across disciplines, with a life-span perspective regarding mid-life. Coverage includes individual development in middle age from the psychological and biological perspectives as well as the sociocultural context in which middle-aged individuals live and work, including physical health in mid-life, psychological well-being, cognitive development, the impact of work on the individual, and the general development of the "self." This age period is increasingly becoming the focus of scholarly attention as the largest cohort in U.S. history are now moving into the middle years (e.g., the "babyboomers"). From 1990 to 2015 the number of middle-aged people will increase 72 percent from 47 to 80 million. Contributors are outstanding scholars in the field of adult development Addresses critical theoretical issues in midlife Includes important contributions to our understanding of physical health at midlife Presents a thorough review of women's health at midlife Takes a holistic approach to biopsychosocial functioning at midlife

Adoption is an extremely complex and emotionally demanding process for all those involved. This book explores the emotional experience of adoption from a psychoanalytic perspective, and demonstrates how psychoanalytic understanding and treatment can contribute to thinking about and working with adopted children and their families. Drawing on psychoanalytic, attachment and child development theory, and detailed in-depth clinical case discussion, The Emotional Experience of Adoption explores issues such as: the emotional experience of children placed for adoption, and how this both shapes and is shaped by unconscious processes in the child's inner world how psychoanalytic child psychotherapy can help as a distinctive source of understanding and as a treatment for children who are either in the process of being adopted or already adopted how such understanding can inform planning and decision making amongst professionals and carers. The Emotional Experience of Adoption explains and accounts for the emotional and psychological complexities involved for child, parents and professionals in adoption. It will be of interest and relevance to anyone involved at a personal level in the adoption process or professionals working in the fields of adoption, social work, child mental health, foster care and family support.
