Immerse yourself in the history of Japanese immigration in the mid-1930s through the saga of the Ohira family who arrived in Brazil before World War II, with the goal of achieving financial success and returning to their hometown in Japan. See how their dreams changed with the difficulties that they had to face, but together as a family and as members of the Cotia Agricultural Cooperative they survived the Post-War period and settled in the Brazilian society without, however, losing their cultural values. The Japanese in Brazil contributed not only to the Brazilian economy, but also participated in promoting cultural exchange between Brazil and Japan through art, music, theater and dance. Currently, Brazil is home to the largest population of Japanese origin outside Japan, with around 1.5 million Nikkei (a term used to describe the Japanese and their descendants).

The Collection written by Mark J. Curran and has been published by Trafford Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-25 with Poetry categories.

"The Collection" is meant as an introduction to and summary of Curran's primary and secondary holdings on Brazil's "Literatura de Cordel" now at the Latin American Library of Tulane University. The book relates the story of how the "cordel" collection was put together including telling of its primary sources, the poets themselves and "cordel" stands or "barracas" in cities or towns that sold the broadsides from the mid - 1960s to 2013. Photos and short biographic entries of the poets, printers and publishers are a big part of the story. The lengthy second part of the book is comprised of the lists of the broadsides themselves (accordng to title by the author's choice, author following when known), xeroxed copies of historic titles, and Curran's library of secondary sources dealing with the collection. The author believes that this book has most everything a prospective researcher or "aficionado" needs to know about the Mark J. Curran Collection of "A Literatura de Cordel."

Saudades preserves an account of the tumultuous transition of Brazil from 1868, when it was a monarchy and slavery was still legal, into the modern state it is today, told through the lives and observations of two women: Chiquita, a Brazilian, and her granddaughter Annita. Chiquita's stories are expanded as Annita explores the culture of past and present Brazil through the stories of her family, and the old w0men she meets in her grandmother's small Brazilian town. The book deals honestly with issues of race, religion, gender, and most of all, cultural duality. The Brazilian landscape, family life, and Chiquita's husband's work as founder of the YMCA in Latin America comprise important features of Saudades.

African Heritage And Memories Of Slavery In Brazil And The South Atlantic World written by Ana Lucia Araujo and has been published by Cambria Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-06 with Social Science categories.

This book explores the history of African tangible and intangible heritages and its links with the public memory of slavery in Brazil and Angola. The two countries are deeply connected, given how most enslaved Africans, forcibly brought to Brazil during the era of the Atlantic slave trade, were from West Central Africa. Brazil imported the largest number of enslaved Africans during the Atlantic slave trade and was the last country in the western hemisphere to abolish slavery in 1888. Today, other than Nigeria, the largest population of African descent is in Brazil. Yet it was only in the last twenty years that Brazil's African heritage and its slave past have gained greater visibility. Prior to this, Brazil's African heritage and its slave past were completely neglected. This is the first book in English to focus on African heritage and public memory of slavery in Brazil and Angola. This interdisciplinary study examines visual images, dance, music, oral accounts, museum exhibitions, artifacts, monuments, festivals, and others forms of commemoration to illuminate the social and cultural dynamics that over the last twenty years have propelled--or prevented--the visibility of African heritage (and its Atlantic slave trade legacy) in the South Atlantic region. The book makes a very important contribution to the understanding of the place of African heritage and slavery in the official history and public memory of Brazil and Angola, topics that remain understudied. The study's focus on the South Atlantic world, a zone which is sparsely covered in the scholarly corpus on Atlantic history, will further research on other post-slave societies. African Heritage and Memories of Slavery in Brazil and the South Atlantic World is an important book for African studies and Latin American studies. It is especially valuable for African Diaspora studies, African history, Atlantic history, history of Brazil, history of slavery, and Caribbean history.
