Excerpt from Memories of by-Gone Days When my husband asked me to write the foreword to this little book I was glad, for no one except the author can feel so great an interest in this as I do. His articles and pictures for the outdoor magazines have been a pleasure to both of us, and it has long been my desire to see them gathered into a volume in permanent form. In Memories of Bygone Days there is no morbid tendency to disparage present joys, but simply a wholesome retrospect. Lulled in the countless chambers of the brain Our thoughts are linked by many a hidden chain. We may make of memory a blessing or a curse, just as we will. It is a stupendous thought that we are augmenting or decreasing future pleasure by the way we spend today. The only use we have for our past is to get a future out of it. All the pleasures of today One by one soon glide away To the golden shore of sweet long ago. Happy is that man whose memories are pleasant and profitable company. Alice kimball steele. Excerpt from Bygone Days in Chicago: Recollections of the Garden City of the Sixties As in our national life the old regime is divided from the new by the Civil War of 1861, so in the minds of Chicagoans the city's past is demarcated from the present by the great fire of 1871 In respect to both it is a case of before or after. Happily, the ordeal through which the nation was made to pass, exhausting as it was, left it physically intact; whereas the catastrophe that visited this community came near obliterating it, and in no respect was the destruction more complete, or so ir reparable, as in the matter of records and landmarks. Hence the ante-fire Garden City will exist for the future only as it may be restored from the memories of those who were of it; and while, unfortunately, all too little has been done to revive the Wonder City's past to evoke, amid indigenous surroundings, the masterful men and stir ring events that so distinguish its virile adolescence it is only too true that what is not soon recorded will be lost to future generations without hope of recovery. Excerpt from Memories of Three Score Years and Ten This volume was begun with special reference to my kinspeople. As it developed it seemed to contain matter of interest to a wider circle; sketches of honored and useful men and women, whose memory ought to be cherished; scenes in bygone days and stirring times, little known to the present generation; suggestions drawn from experience, which may be of value, specially to the young entering on the duties of life. It covers a period of nearly "three-score years and ten," spent under a variety of conditions, embracing: childhood; school days; college, university and seminary life; a visit in youth to Ireland, the home of my ancestors; travel and study abroad at a later period; pastoral work in Amelia, Farmville and Lynchburg, Virginia; service in the army of the Confederate States as lieutenant and chaplain; the progress and close of the Civil War and of Reconstruction in Virginia; a period of service as Secretary of Missions of the Southern Presbyterian Church (1872-1883), including Reconstruction in South Carolina (1872-5); presidency of Hampden-Sidney College (1883-1904), and membership in the Constitutional Convention of Virginia (1901-2). It includes residences outside of my native State in Edinburgh, Scotland; Columbia, South Carolina; and Baltimore, Maryland. It is written in plain, colloquial style, without reference to rhetorical effect, as my life has been spent in the discharge of plain duty, mostly among plain people, by whom, chiefly, it will be read, when read at all. Some of the recollections are of things told me by friends and relatives, and I have endeavored to state everything with absolute accuracy; others, to a considerable extent, are sustained by written and printed documents in my possession or accessible to me. I trust it may prove useful to some of my fellow-men. If so, it will be the occasion of thanksgiving in my declining years. Excerpt from Days of the Past: A Medley of Memories Lord Cockburn, in his Circuit Journeys, remarks on the marvellous improvements he had seen on his progresses through Aberdeenshire. Memory does not carry me quite so far back, though I have seen his lordship seated on the bench, but I can remember much of the devolution of the transformation. Few of the semi-lowland shires had to contend with greater disadvantages. The uplands were highland; the midlands were hill and moss; and the eastern flats, with the bleak coast of Buchan, are swept by bitter gales from the Pole. In Buchan, trees and bushes were shaved, as with a razor, when they rose above the shelter of the 'dens.' The climate was severe and the soil unkindly. Sand dunes fenced the county from the Atlantic gales, yet a parish had been buried there under the sand drift. The ground was fertile in granite, yet it is a remarkable fact that the venerable buildings of Old Aberdeen were of imported freestone, which shows that the Aberdonians of ancient days, if enterprising, were not resourceful. Excerpt from Memories of Childhood's Slavery Days Those slaves that were not married served the food from the great house, and about half-past eleven they would send the older children with food to the workers in the fields. Of course, I followed, and before we got to the fields, we had eaten the food nearly all up. When the workers returned home they complained, and we were whipped. The slaves got their allowance every Monday night of molasses, meat, corn meal, and a kind of flour called dredgings or shorts. Perhaps this allowance would be gone before the next Mon day night, in which case the slaves would steal hogs and chickens. Then would come the whipping-post. Master himself never whipped his slaves; this was left to the overseer. We children had no supper, and only a little piece of. Bread or something of the kind in the morning. Our dishes consisted of one wooden bowl, and oyster shells were our spoons. This bowl served for about fifteen children, and often the dogs and the ducks and the peafowl had a dip in it. Sometimes we had buttermilk and bread in our bowl, sometimes greens or bones. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from East Coast Days: And Memories The writer has sent out many pages, which have been read by some not without sympathy. But he has never tried to say what he has most thought of. And he could not have expressed it if he had tried. Here is a quite inevitable Economy. Though times beyond number you have Spoken to your fellows, and of very serious matters, you have not talked out all your heart. They do not know you not those who know you best. Strange are the diverse shades Of unutterable thought. Stranger the diverse achings and stings of the poor heart's trouble. And there is a pudency. You have felt much, which it was no discredit to have felt, which it would have been shame not to have felt yet which must not be spoken.
