Excerpt from Memories of the Old Homestead This is the story of my old Lorraine home, and I tell it, thinking it may be of interest to my children or to the children of others of the family. I have not attempted to give an elaborate family history, but have written of the early times in the old homestead and of some of the things that there took place, as I now remember them. If in this recital the personal pronoun occurs too often, it must be remembered that I am talking, principally, of my own recollections. Neither do I wish to convey the impression that the writer did any more than his proper share of the work or had more interesting experiences than others of the family. Indeed, being the youngest of a family of nine, it is more likely that he, the baby, had the easiest time of any, and, if any favors were shown, he got his full share. I intended to occupy but a few pages, but as I got into the subject I found more difficulty as to what I should omit than what to tell, and as material for volumes crowded my mind, I fully realized that the old live in the past, the young in the future. Excerpt from Around an Old Homestead: A Book of Memories His is but a small sheaf among many others; for, as the floor of the woods is covered with fallen leaves and pieces of detached bark, so the little wood land of my thoughts is strewn over with these rough fragments and memories. Yet the old homestead still stands as I have written it. There is no latch string. It is always open to receive us. Excerpt from Homestead Highways Nature is the mother of sentiment, and to multitudes of people nothing is more charming in its reminiscent quality than the old New England country life. Away from its quiet homesteads and tree-shadowed highways, into the noisy, crowded ruts of the city, the awakened memories of its old-fashioned and simple habits, its plain fare, its open-handed hospitality, are like beautiful pictures swept clear of years of dust and cobwebs. A boyhood or a girlhood laid among such pastoral scenes is the halcyon period of a life-time. Of such, among the fields, the woods, the meadows and streams, my book is in part a suggestion. Excerpt from Reminiscences of an Old Westchester Homestead All things in this section have so changed, since those times so cuj oyable to me, that in the now crowded and over-populated county it seems almost impossible that such a type of rural life could have existed so few years ago. But let as draw for a few moments the curtain of mist that shrouds the past, and look into the lives, traditions, and superstitions of the people of Old Westchester before our coun try was Spoiled by the locomotive, the summer! Cottage, and, worse than all, the land speculator. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Sketches of New England, or Memories of the Country The Author Of the following pages is a New Englander. He was born on the banks Of one of her beautiful rivers, and was nurtured among her mountains. He boasts his descent direct from one Of those stern Old Puritans who chartered the May ower, and much of his childhood was spent on the very homestead, Where the good man pitched his tent, and cleared his land. Like many Of her sons indeed, he has, in riper years, wandered over sundry parts Of the world, and has seen and known much of its excellence and beauty but he has always returned to the rude and rocky shore Of New Eng land, with new love for her homes and her institutions, -new respect for her hardy sons. He is willing to confess that all his predilections are for New England; that although Aba na and Pharpar, rivers Of Damascus, are better than all her streams, he loves them not as well that he would live upon her barren soil, and die there among his kindred. Rediscovered by Ruth Bader Ginsburg, this unique account of life before, during, and after the Civil War was written by the wife of Supreme Court Justice John Marshall Harlan, who played a central role in some of the most significant civil rights decisions of his era. “Remarkable . . . a chronicle of the times, as seen by a brave woman of the era.”—Ruth Bader Ginsburg, from the foreword When Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg began researching the history of the women associated with the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress sent her Malvina Harlan’s unpublished manuscript. Recalling Abigail Adams’s order to “remember the ladies,” Justice Ginsburg guided its long journey from forgotten document to published book. Malvina Shanklin Harlan witnessed—and gently influenced—national history from the perspective of a political leader’s wife. Her husband, Supreme Court Justice John Marshall Harlan (1833–1911), wrote the lone dissenting opinion in Plessy v. Ferguson, the infamous case that endorsed separate but equal segregation. And for fifty-seven years he was married to a woman who was busy making a mental record of their eventful lives. After Justice Harlan’s death in 1911, Malvina wrote Some Memories of a Long Life, 1854–1911, as a testament to her husband’s accomplishments and to her own. The memoir begins with Malvina, the daughter of passionate abolitionists, becoming the teenage bride of John Marshall Harlan, whose family owned more than a dozen slaves. Malvina depicts her life in antebellum Kentucky, and her courageous defense of the Harlan homestead during the Civil War. She writes of her husband’s ascent in legal circles and his eventual appointment to the Supreme Court in 1877, where he was the author of opinions that continued to influence American race relations deep into the twentieth century. Yet Some Memories is more than a wife’s account of a famous and powerful man. It chronicles the remarkable evolution of a young woman from Indiana who became a keen observer of both her family’s life and that of her nation.
