Transnational migration studies tend to conceptualize a clear spatial distinction between refugee camps and their surroundings as “spaces of the displaced” and “spaces of the citizen” respectively. However, the geography of memory, when seen through the prism of a space-state-citizenship relationship, is much more complicated and difficult to disentangle. Only when examining cultural preservation of memories of displacement can we shed light on these complex connections. Memory, Conflicts, Disasters, and the Geopolitics of the Displaced is a collection of innovative research that examines the preservation of socio-cultural memory in the wake of disaster and violence. Featuring coverage of a broad range of topics including conscription, refugee culture, and climate change, this book is ideally designed for human rights workers, activists, historians, policymakers, government officials, researchers, academicians, and students in the fields of sociology, anthropology, geography, politics, and urban planning.

Constructing Social Memory written by Marta Vignola and has been published by Ethics International Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-03-19 with Social Science categories.
This book is about the role of memory in contemporary social sciences and societies. The work has two parts. In the first, experts from different countries address the topic of memory from a theoretical and epistemological perspective: e.g. historical memory, biographical memory, memory as an act of creation, as well as and the narrative dimension of memory. In the second part, case studies are presented, from different countries (France, Italy, Albania, Spain, Brazil, Peru among others) referring to the relationship between memories and aspects of social life, such as migration, conflict, gender relations, journalism and public opinion, culture, collective trauma, art, collaborative archaeology, and the use of film materials. The book has both a political and a methodological intent. It underlines how the circulation of conflicting and unresolved narratives of past events may take multiple forms through a wide range of communicative, aesthetic and cultural codes. The empirical contributions deal with traumatic, silenced, stubborn, and insurgent memories, whose narration is able to have an impact on present and future. Thus, each chapter is an attempt to give back the right to speak to people and stories often placed on the margins of dominant narratives. Constructing Social Memory introduces insights and themes of study that embrace a multiplicity of approaches to memory, and makes a wholly original contribution to the topic.

Recent political developments in Spain regarding Catalonia have prompted scholars from several disciplines to research the singularity of this region and of the territories of the old Crown of Aragon. Against the backdrop of the pro-independence movement, those in favor and against have insisted on the particularity or commonality of Catalonia and the Països Catalans (Catalan-speaking areas) within the Spanish State. From the Catalan point of view, their singularity is not sufficiently recognized, and respect for their institutions and their autonomy is at stake to the point that many prefer to secede from Spain. Singularity or its absence play a relevant role in the construction of identity, which seems to be key in understanding many Catalans' attitudes towards the central government, a fluid concept that allows for a variety of interpretations. History of Catalonia and Its Implications for Contemporary Nationalism and Cultural Conflict is a critical reference book that centers around the topic of Catalan cultural and linguistic identity. With input from renowned scholars in several fields, the chapters explore the issue of Catalan identity from a variety of perspectives. While highlighting the legal and historical component to identity and also sociolinguistics and political linguistics, this book is ideally intended for scholars in the fields of Hispanic studies, history, linguistics, political science, and literary studies as well as practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students interested in contemporary politics and the political developments in Spain regarding Catalonia.

Migration is a multifaceted phenomenon that plays a critical role in today’s world, yet there have been few attempts to look beneath the surface of the mass movements of people. Particularly, the changing face of migration is becoming more feminized, with women increasingly moving as independent or single migrants rather than as the wives, mothers, or daughters of male migrants. Yet, in literature on migration, the voices of women are still silent. This creates an urgent need to advance academic research on female international migration by examining women as independent migrants. Immigrant Women’s Voices and Integrating Feminism Into Migration Theory comprehensively documents the experiences of immigrant women across the globe and the important theories that define their experiences. The chapters give firsthand accounts of women speaking about their own experiences on migration and topics associated with women and migration. This book aims to give women their own voice and to stand apart from previous literature in which male relatives spoke on behalf of immigrant women to tell their stories for them. While highlighting topics on women in migration including feminism, gendered social roles, first-person narratives, and the female identity, this book is ideally for professionals in social science disciplines as well as practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students wanting to expand their knowledge on women and migration, gender violence, and women empowerment.
