HIS SUMMER VACATION IS RUINED when twelve-year-old Buzz Collins is forced to share his room and emotional space with his grandfather, who has Alzheimer's disease, and his parents forbid him to associate with his best friend, Mitch. The thought of giving up his friendship is heartbreaking enough. But how can he relate to someone who forgets his grandson's name, wears adult diapers, and thinks dog biscuits are people cookies, someone who could die in the night and scare Buzz right out of puberty? Buzz thinks Alzheimer's is caused by a traumatic event, such as the train accident that killed Grandpa's brother Barkley in childhood. When Grandpa's mind wanders and he mistakes Buzz for Barkley, Buzz assumes the role of his great uncle, and in the process develops compassion and appreciation for his grandfather. The Collins' family copes with Grandpa the best they can. But the situation turns deadly when Buzz and Mitch - whose friendship Buzz refuses to end - attempt to cure Grandpa of Alzheimer's disease by recreating the train accident on a hot summer day. Despite the sad subject matter, Down the Memory Hole is a laugh-out-loud, coming-of-age story about Alzheimer's Disease as viewed through the mind of a frustrated 12-year-old who dearly loves his grandfather but wishes they weren't roommates. (Young Adult)

In 'Nineteen Eighty-Four', George Orwell's prophetic novel about a future "world of lies", the author wrote about a device called the Memory Hole. It is used to alter any record, like a press report or a photograph, that no longer fits with the ever-changing policies of the Big Brother regime. Now imagine an historian trying to retrieve even a few of those records before they are doctored or destroyed. Would it be possible to reverse what Orwell described as a "process of continuous alteration" of the past? 'Into the Memory Hole' is much more than a nostalgia trip. It is an attempt to re-evaluate our assumptions about human history, to rediscover the shocking truth about our own "world of lies".

The U.S. history curriculum is under attack. Politicians, political analysts, and ideologues seek to wipe clean the slate of the American past and replace it with one of their own invention. The basis for this new narrative comes from political beliefs of the present, rather than any systematic examination of the past. These anti-historians campaign to insert their version of American history into the nation’s classrooms, hoping to begin a process that will forever transform our understanding of America’s past. The Memory Hole examines five central topics in the US history curriculum, showing how anti-historians of both the left and right seek to distort these topics and insert a refashioned story in America’s classrooms. Ignoring facts, refashioning other facts and pretending that there are no rules in the telling of history, these re-interpreters of the past place the minds of America’s young people in danger. The beleaguered hero of this book is the discipline of History, and The Memory Hole shows how the history curriculum should adhere to history’s habits of mind that require complex, sophisticated and subtle thinking about the past. History and social studies teachers, students of history and all those who care about the deep and enduring value of history will value this book and its conclusions.

A memory hole is the banishment of problematic thoughts. We exile that which we prefer not to exist. Enter the perilous Memory Hole: The Psychology of Dystopia, to explore a legion of social and psychological themes through the lens of dystopian literature. The crushing fist of 1984 annihilating thoughts from existence as a means of persuasion. The exquisite seduction of addiction as an agent of control in Brave New World. Incineration of the written word to bask in the embers of peace of mind in Fahrenheit 451. Each chapter weaves in and out of the dystopian realms forged by the great storytellers of our current age, and those of yesteryear. Memory Hole begins a century ago in the 1920s and journeys ever closer to the present day. With each chapter comes a new decade, along with the relevant social and cognitive psychological science. The odyssey also wades into the domains of neuroscience and behavioral economics as it weaves a cohesive narrative to explore over a century of science. Social issues are examined in parallel with each dystopian novel. Censorship, overpopulation, and hyperconnectivity are the themes of today. The climate crisis and human cloning are the themes of tomorrow. We can confront these issues with courage or banish them to the memory hole. Alas, the destruction of information serves to shield us from knowledge.

I feel that I am a better person because of Alzheimer's and the help I have received from many women and men. I have a new personality that has been trimmed of alot of dead-weight experiences by memory holes caused by the disease. I realize that the random destructive of brain cell deposits could have also taken good memories. However I am blessed by chance. My vocation taught me that behavior can be modified. Since my recovery, I have programmed myself to adhere to Doctor Gary Small's Prevention Program to minimize the Dementia from the disease. My book documents my life and involvement with Alzheimer's. I am hoping that it will inspire people. People who are either expecting or fearing that they will get the disease. They should arm themselves with knowledge and change personal bad habits that are conducive to the disease.
